Yara Shahidi On The Importance Of Representation For Women Of Color

For the past 15 years, Cartier has made dedicated efforts to highlight businesses that promote impactful social and environmental change and, specifically, uplift the women who are at the helm of those companies. The luxury brand launched the Cartier Women’s Initiative in 2006 and, since then, has provided financial support and mentorship to over 200 female business owners. After sorting through 876 applications and hosting an inspiring three-day virtual summit that concluded on May 26, representatives of Cartier officially selected this year’s winners for the 2021 Cartier Women’s Initiative.

Yara Shahidi does not need a crown for us to know that she's royalty, but during Sunday night's MTV Movie and TV Awards, the Grown-ish actress and producer gave us a stunning reminder. Shahidi pulled up to the award show wearing a tracksuit from her new collaboration with Adidas, paired with an Etro bustier, and a hairstyle that had us bowing down. Hairstylist SherriAnn Cole-Robertson is to thank for Shahidi's beautifully original look, which included fishtail braids and two small twists that connected into a crown.

Yara said, “Honestly, I'm just honored we've been able to go on this journey for eight years and that we’re ending it ‘cause it feels like a great place to end… We've been able to see each character evolve in such beautiful ways. Yara Shahidi stepped out at the MTV Movie and TV Awards to present the award for best performance in a movie, and she used the opportunity to show us how she styles her new Adidas collaboration. The Grown-ish actress and producer wore one of her ReCreation Heritage printed tracksuits, a twist on the Beckenbauer, for which she took creative inspiration from her Iranian and African American heritage. The silky material is an ode to her Grampie and his Persian rug shop and the sleeves of the jacket can be pulled in with a drawstring for a slightly different vibe.
