Yann Tiersen

Yann has been honing his musical aesthetic since he could stand on two legs. Born in 1970 in Brest, Brittany, on the western edge of continental Europe, he started learning piano at the age of four, taking up violin at the age of six and receiving classical training at musical academies in Rennes, Nantes and Boulogne. Then, at the age of 13, he chose to alter his destiny, breaking his violin into pieces, buying a guitar and forming a rock band.

Yann Tiersen: “I became more about seeing what’s around me, living stuff and organic stuff” – Interview

The Breton on his new album Kerber and its accompanying film, his island home of Ushant, and rekindling his love of electronic music. Yann Tiersen is online, live from the Western end of the English Channel. He is talking to us from his studio on the island of Ushant, lying just off the Brittany coast. With merely a couple of hundred inhabitants, the French territory now has a substantial piece of music in its honour in the form of Tiersen’s new album Kerber, named after a chapel on the island. There is an accompanying film, too, where viewers are taken on a visual and social journey across the island. On it he brings his instrumental capabilities with keyboard, electronics and violin to the fore, with the help of director Kit Monteith.

Interview: Yann Tiersen

Celebrated avant-garde musician and composer Yann Tiersen is calling from his home on Ushant, a tiny island in the Celtic Sea, just off the coast of mainland France. Ushant provided inspiration for his twelfth album, Kerber, which was released on August 27 via Mute Records. With a mesmerizing mix of piano patterns and swirling, atmospheric electronic elements, these songs mark a daring new chapter in his career. But Tiersen has always been highly adventurous with his work: since his 1995 debut album, _ La Valse des monstres_, Tiersen has been revered for blending a wide range of styles, incorporating everything from classical to post-rock influences. Kerber continues his innovative streak, blending minimalistic piano melodies and intertwining them with atmospheric electronic elements. Here, Tiersen tells The Big Takeover how this unique album was created, and looks back on his lengthy and innovative career.

Yann Tiersen – Kerber

Yann Tiersen has spent the last year and a half in isolation. Nothing remarkable in that, you might think, but his circumstances are slightly different. The multi-instrumentalist continues to live and make his music on the tiny French island of Ushant, positioned off the coast of Brittany at the south-west entrance to the English Channel.

Composer Yann Tiersen Continues To Expand His World Of Song On New LP, Kerber

Famed French composer, Yann Tiersen, remembers seeing a mountain lion. He was out in nature about five years ago in Northern California when the animal began following him and his cycling party. Tiersen and his group were hours into a long ride and far from formal help. He remembers seeing cubs, too, thinking that the mother and babies were probably very hungry, even starving. It was dangerous. Around that time, a cougar attacked several hikers in Washington State, killing one. While the mountain lion never pounced, for Tiersen, the experience was formative. At that moment, a strong sense of what an ecosystem really is crystallized in his mind. Life is not human-centric, of course. So, Tiersen thought, his music — including his new release, Kerber, out Friday (Aug. 27) —should be something of an ecosystem, too.
