Phillies' Yairo Munoz: Swipes first bag

Munoz went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in a 7-0 loss Tuesday in Texas. Munoz singled and stole second base in the fifth inning. Tuesday's single was his first hit of the season that didn't leave the park. The 27-year-old has reached base safely in all five of his starts since having his contract selected from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Phillies' Yairo Munoz: Swats homer Saturday

Munoz went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 2-1 win over Washington. The game was tied through six innings before Munoz accounted for the first run with his seventh-inning solo shot. The hit was his second of the season, and both have left the yard. Munoz isn't known for his power -- he's hit just 13 homers over 580 career major-league plate appearances and has never hit more than 13 in any minor-league campaign.

The Phillies brought up a hot bat before Tuesday night's game against the Miami Marlins. Infielder Yairo Munoz was added to the roster and started at second base. Munoz, 27, has big-league time with St. Louis and Boston. He was in big-league camp with the Phillies as a non-roster player this spring.

Phillies' Yairo Munoz: Gets first hit of season

Munoz went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Thursday's 10-1 win over the Nationals. Munoz picked up his first hit in eight plate appearances this season with a solo shot during the eighth inning. The 27-year-old posted a strong .319/.345/.454 slash line in 45 games for Triple-A Lehigh Valley before earning a call-up this week, but he doesn't have a path to consistent playing time in the majors. He should see the short side of a platoon with Bryson Stott at second base while Johan Camargo (knee) is on the injured list.

Phillies grab some minor league depth, sign Josh Ockimey, Yairo Munoz

In 2021, when Didi Gregorius spent so much time on the injured list for pseudogout, the team was put in a tough place. They didn’t really have much depth in the minors that was ready to contribute at the big league level, their top prospect at the position was still a year away and their major league bench options were “shortstops” in name only. Forced to choose, the team gave Nick Maton a shot at the job, but Joe Girardi’s allergy to using younger players to which the only cure is a steady diet of “professional hitter veterans” meant Maton had a short leash. When he wasn’t able to convince the team, they were then forced to try out Ronald Torreyes at the spot. All he was able to give the team was a 68 wRC+ and an OPS that barely broke .630.
