Pelicans' Willy Hernangomez: Big double-double off bench

Hernangomez accumulated 17 points (5-8 FG, 7-7 FT), 14 rebounds, one assist and one steal in 26 minutes during Thursday's 127-94 win over the Trail Blazers. With Jonas Valanciunas coming into Thursday nursing an ankle injury, Hernangomez saw plenty of court time once the Pelicans had the game well in hand, and he turned it into his second straight double-double. The 27-year-old center has demonstrated he can be productive when he gets the opportunity, and with New Orleans all but locked into the ninth seed in the Western Conference and a spot in the play-in tournament, Hernangomez could see big minutes over the final two games of the regular season as well if Valanciunas gets additional rest ahead of the postseason.

Pelicans' Willy Hernangomez: Doubledoubles in relief

Hernangomez ended with 12 points (5-12 FG, 2-2 FT), 12 rebounds, three assists and one block in 26 minutes during Tuesday's 123-109 victory over the Kings. Hernangomez continues to play admirably as a placeholder for Jonas Valanciunas (ankle). Hernangomez could be in line for one more start, but. Valanciunas should be ready for the playoffs.

Pelicans' Willy Hernangomez: Double-doubles off bench

Hernangomez finished Sunday's 117-112 victory over the Hawks with 17 points (5-12 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 7-7 FT), 10 rebounds, two assists and one steal across 15 minutes. Hernangomez scored in double figures for a fifth straight game and grabbed his most rebounds since Jan. 31 en route to his sixth double-double of the season. The Spaniard continues to provide adequate production off the bench and has averaged 11.4 points and 7.1 rebounds over his last nine appearances.

Pelicans' Willy Hernangomez: Perfect from field in loss

Hernangomez ended with 15 points (6-6 FG, 3-4 FT), six rebounds, one assist, one block and one steal over 22 minutes during Friday's 142-120 loss to the Hornets. Hernangomez bounced back from a scoreless performance during his last outing to notch his third double-digit scoring night over his last five games. In the 13 appearances when sixth-year center has played over 20 minutes, he's averaged 14.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 25.3 minutes per game. With CJ McCollum (COVID-19 protocols) and Brandon Ingram (hamstring) sidelined for the foreseeable future, there should be plenty of minutes to go around, especially since New Orleans opted to run with a bigger lineup Friday.

Pelicans' Willy Hernangomez: Productive outing off bench

Hernangomez contributed 12 points (5-5 FG, 2-2 FT), five rebounds, one assist and one steal in 18 minutes during Tuesday's 121-109 loss to Memphis. Hernangomez was perfect from the field en route to 12 points, his best performance since returning from a four-game absence due to COVID-19 protocols. Jonas Valanciunas, Jaxson Hayes and Hernangomez were all productive during Tuesday's loss, but as long as they are all garnering sizeable roles, it'll likely diminish the overall potential of all three players.

Pelicans practice report presented by HUB International: Willy Hernangomez back with team after four-game absence

Over the past week, Willy Hernangomez has been a lot like the most avid of New Orleans basketball fans, counting down the hours while awaiting tip-off of Pelicans games, the best part of his day. Of course, the big difference between the 27-year-old and the average local hoops aficionado is that Hernangomez normally would’ve been putting up on a uniform, instead of watching from his couch.

Josh Hart questionable, Willy Hernangomez, Garrett Temple out for Sunday game at Houston

Although New Orleans chose to split it travel-wise into two separate road trips of two games apiece, the Pelicans have a chance Sunday to go 3-1 over a four-game span of Week 16 away contests. A win Sunday in Houston also would give the team its longest overall winning streak since just before Christmas. For New Orleans to make it three consecutive victories, however, the Pelicans will have to do so while competing without key reserves and potentially one full-time starter.

Willy Hernangomez, Garrett Temple out, Josh Hart questionable for Friday at Denver

New Orleans’ second unit played a vital role Tuesday in erasing a 15-point second-half deficit at Detroit, allowing the Pelicans to even their record at 1-1 on a road trip against Central Division opponents. Unfortunately for the Pelicans, two members of that group will not be available to play Friday at Denver in the team’s third road game of this week. Willy Hernangomez and Garrett Temple were placed in health and safety protocols and are listed as out on Thursday afternoon’s official injury update by the team.

Despite holding a 19-32 record , the New Orleans Pelicans sit just one-and-a-half games behind the 10th-place Portland Trail Blazers for the final spot in the play-in tournament. The Pels will continue their current four-game road trip on Friday night against the Denver Nuggets, but learned on Thursday that they'll be down at least two important members of their rotation.
