The name William Wallace is one revered by Scots of many generations, a freedom-fighter immortalised in word in deed, with the occasional touch of Hollywood thrown in. But three decades before Mel Gibson gave one lucky Scottish face-painter an unusual paid gig, Celtic supporters had their own hero of the same name to follow. A man who would carve out his own place in the country’s folklore, albeit on a football field rather than a battlefield.

Willie Wallace on Celtic’s 1967 Scottish Cup Final win over Aberdeen

We had just four days between arriving home from Prague and the cup final so it was home for one night only, then off to Seamill to prepare for the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen. I often hear today of teams complaining about too many games at the end of the season but if it’s handled properly, I think it can be good for them as games are the best way of keeping up fitness and there’s no need for the heavy training sessions.

Willie Jo Parkerson Hale Renfroe Wallace, 86, of Harlingen, Texas, died Friday, Sept. 17, 2021. She was born March 14, 1935 in Snyder, Ark., to the late Dennis and Geraldine Austin Parkerson. Mrs. Wallace worked as the Administrator of the Leisure Lodge Nursing Homes in Sulphur Springs, Texas for 15 years. She was also a traveler, a volunteer and organizer.
