Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard scored a collaborative chart-topper when “Poncho and Lefty” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart on July 23, 1983. The tune, which was penned by songwriting legend Townes Van Zandt, served as the title track to Willie and Merle’s 1983 duet album. However, if not for an eleventh-hour recommendation by Willie’s daughter, Lana, the tandem would have never recorded the tune.

After the virtual presentation as On The Road Livestream in 2020, due to COVID-19 restrictions, Farm Aid 2021 returns as an in-person event on September 25 at Xfinity Theatre in Hartford, Connecticut. The longstanding event will be headlined by board members, Neil Young, Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, and Margo Price — who just became the first female artist elected to the Farm Aid board in April.

Sturgill Simpson announces new album ‘The Ballad of Dood and Juanita’ ft. Willie Nelson

Sturgill Simpson has announced a new album, The Ballad of Dood and Juanita, due digitally and on CD on August 20, with a vinyl release coming December 3 (pre-order). A press release call its a concept album, and Sturgill says, "I just wanted to write a story—not a collection of songs that tell a story, but an actual story, front to back," adding that the music is a "rollercoaster ride through all the styles of traditional country and bluegrass and mountain music that I love, including gospel and a cappella." It was written and recorded in less than a week, and features the same musicians from Sturgill's two Cuttin' Grass bluegrass albums. One song features Willie Nelson. Artwork and tracklist below.
