The Complete Works of William Shakespeare @ Costa Mesa Playhouse in Costa Mesa – Review

What would typically be backstage is in the front of the stage in this production. The costume rack is set upright in the center of the stage. Red curtains that would typically be in the front are in the back of the stage. Looking at the reversed set, you know this play will be told in a unique way. This show is a gag that goes on for about 90 minutes. The gag is the original performers can’t perform, so the audience is going to watch the stage crew perform the show. Hayley Jackson, the dramaturg, Ana Fujimoto, the lighting assistant, and Sammie Moore, the costume assistant, haphazardly go through condensed versions of Shakespearian classics with minimal regard for accuracy.

Cappies Review: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [Revised]

The thought of attending a show featuring every play by William Shakespeare is a questionable prospect, to say the least. However, Meridian High School’s performance of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [Revised] is anything but. It ran for nine years on the West End, performed by only three actors. The show takes the audience through all the chaos imaginable when an acting troupe attempts to perform all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays in the span of 97 minutes. In order to fit all the plays in such a short amount of time it performs every comedy Shakespeare wrote at the same time, performs Othello as a rap, depicts the histories as a football game, and so much more.

Throwback Thursday: OU Professor versus William Shakespeare

Dr. Paul Kendall was a biographer in a big way. He spent years traveling the world to gather information for his many celebrated biographies. He even wrote a book on “The Art of Biography.” His book entitled, “Richard III”, about the 15th century King of England, made quite an impact on the literary world as it contradicted the image of the same king long established by the great playwright, William Shakespeare.
