Cannes 2021 Welcomes Wes Anderson, Leos Carax in Stacked Lineup

The lineup for this year’s Cannes Film Festival has been announced, ushering in a slew of highly awaited films like Wes Anderson’s delayed French Dispatch and Leos Carax’s Annette, a doubleheader starring Adam Driver and Marion Cotillard. This year’s festival, making a grand return after it was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, will also see new offerings from Mia Hansen-Løve (Bergman Island), Asghar Farhadi (A Hero), and Sean Baker (Red Rocket), all in competition for the Palme d’Or.

After a long year without movie theaters, the Cannes Film Festival is back in full swing with a lineup that includes great names such as Wes Anderson, Sean Baker, Mia Hansen-Love, Leos Carax, and much, much more. The full 2021 lineup was unveiled today in a press conference with Pierre Lescure, president of the Festival de Cannes, and Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the event.

The Cannes Film Festival has announced the lineup for its 2021 festivities, with a record 24 films in contention for the top Palme d’Or prize. The New York Times reports that Wes Anderson’s long-delayed The French Dispatch, Sean Penn’s con artist-centric Flag Day, and Leos Carax’s bizarre musical-comedy Annette are among the competing films, a list that includes new dramas from directors Sean Baker and Paul Verhoeven. Out of competition, Cannes will also be premiering a Todd Haynes–directed documentary about the Velvet Underground, an unofficial biopic about Céline Dion’s life, Oliver Stone’s documentary about the JFK assassination, and an international revenge drama starring Matt Damon in his finest Bass Pro Shops apparel.
