I've Seen Enough: Tre Jones Has Earned Spurs' Backup PG Spot

With Dejounte Murray out with a respiratory illness, the San Antonio Spurs have had to give big starting minutes to second-year guard Tre Jones. Over four starts to close out the season and clinch an unexpected spot in the play-in games, Jones has not just been serviceable, he’s been borderline incredible.

Spurs' Tre Jones: Double-doubles Tuesday

Jones registered 14 points (5-11 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 4-6 FT), four rebounds, 10 assists, one block and one steal across 33 minutes during Tuesday's 116-97 victory over the Nuggets. Jones started for the third game in a row, and while he's never going to put up the same numbers that Dejounte Murray (illness) records on a regular basis, he has been holding down the fort at point guard. This was his first double-double, and over his three starts, he's averaging 13.7 points, 8.7 assists and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Spurs' Tre Jones: Shines in spot start

Jones contributed 18 points (7-11 FG, 2-4 3Pt, 2-2 FT), seven rebounds, seven assists and one steal over 34 minutes during Sunday's 113-92 victory over the Trail Blazers. Jones started in place of Dejounte Murray (illness) for the second game in a row and thrived, registering his second-best scoring mark of the season. Jones should head back to a bench role once Murray is ready to return to action, however, as the Spurs are very much alive in the race for a berth in the play-in tournament.

Spurs' Tre Jones: Unorthodox double-double in loss

Jones racked up nine points (4-14 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 1-3 FT), 10 rebounds, 12 assists, one block and two steals over 37 minutes during Saturday's 119-108 loss to Indiana. Jones notched up just the second double-double of his career Saturday, although it was certainly an unorthodox way of going about it. It was the third time this season he has managed to top double-digits in assists, highlighting his ability to play as the lead facilitator. Of course, we need to remember that the Spurs were without three of their regular starters in this one, perhaps putting a pin in Jones' short-lived explosion.

For Spurs’ Tre Jones, Duke legend more than just a coach

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Spurs point guard Tre Jones considered all the possibilities, looked at the problem from every angle, searched high and low for a solution. Spurs' Tre Jones: Shifts back to bench

Jones will come off the bench Monday against the Grizzlies, Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News reports. Jones started Saturday against the Heat and delivered 19 points (9-13 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 1-1 FT), 11 assists, six rebounds and one steal in 36 minutes, but he'll return to the bench with Dejounte Murray (knee) rejoining the lineup. Jones will still operate as San Antonio's secondary point guard, though he doesn't offer much fantasy upside in that role.

Spurs' Tre Jones: Ruled out Wednesday

Jones (knee) is out Wednesday against Oklahoma City, Bruno Passos of PoundingTheRock.com reports. Jones was doubtful for Wednesday's matchup, so it isn't very surprising to see him ruled out. Lonnie Walker, Tomas Satoransky and Joshua Primo should see increased run off the bench.

Spurs' Tre Jones: Unlikely to play Wednesday

Jones is doubtful for Wednesday's contest against the Thunder due to knee soreness, independent NBA journalist Matthew Tynan reports. Jones was held scoreless across 12 minutes of action during Monday's loss to the Bulls, and he appears to have picked up a knee injury as well. He'll likely be sidelined for the Spurs' final game before the All-Star break, which should open the door for Lonnie Walker, Tomas Satoransky and Joshua Primo to garner increased roles off the bench.
