Tove Jansson, Beloved Creator of the Moomins, Illustrates The Hobbit

What is a Hobbit? A few characters in J.R.R Tolkien’s classic work of children’s fantasy wonder themselves about the diminutive title characters who don’t get out much. Tolkien describes them thoroughly, a handful of well-known British and American actors immortalized them on screen, but the last word on what a Hobbit looks like belongs to the reader. Or — in an edition as richly illustrated as the Swedish and Finnish editions of the book were in 1962 and 1973 — to the Swedish/Finnish artist, Tove Jansson, most famous for her creation of internationally beloved children’s characters, the Moomins.

Walthamstow Wetlands is launching an outdoor exhibition dedicated to Moomins creator Tove Jansson

Walthamstow Wetlands looks like a landscape you might see in a children’s story. The 211-hectare nature reserve is filled with reservoirs that shine like mirrored glass, and are occupied by curious little islands that hum with the sound of wildlife. Confident geese march freely on its immaculately mown grass mounds, seemingly unbothered by the thousands of visitors which pass through the Wetlands each weekend.

The Life and Work of Tove Jansson –Wednesday, March 24th at 7pm

Join Jo Dery, Professor of Film Studies at Keene State College, for a talk about Tove Jansson, author of the beloved Moomin books and other novels, including The Summer Book. In 2016, I visited Finland on a research fellowship to learn about the life and work of artist/author Tove Jansson. I will present a slideshow and talk about Jansson’s work as a cartoonist, painter, picture-book maker, and novelist — as well as her unique life, which she split between in Helsinki and a small remote island in the Gulf of Finland.
