Tony Scott: How A BeBop Jazz Clarinetist Invented New Age Music

A key player in the New York jazz scene of the 50s, clarinetist Tony Scott made a dramatic, career-changing turn at the end of that decade. In 1959, he pursued a nomadic lifestyle for six years, following an insatiable curiosity for exploring new tonalities, asymmetrical phrasing, and improvisation beyond bebop, the dominant American jazz sensibility of the time. What eventually emerged was three fascinating records that, today, are regarded as the first New Age albums.

Why Tony Scott Kept Getting Fired During the Filming of Top Gun

A person might think that getting fired once is bad enough, but getting fired from the same job three times is something that might make a lot of people think that they’re cursed in some way. In Tony Scott’s case, it might have been even worse since the fact that he was fired three times while working on Top Gun, one of the most influential and popular movies of its time, is enough to think that anyone might think twice before hiring him on again. Obviously that wasn’t the case, but the reasons he was canned were a bit petty to be certain, especially since there didn’t appear to be a lot of compromises. But when a boss says to do a job one way and the director does it a different way there’s going to be a clash, and the winner is usually going to be the one that has more clout and more authority.

Jerry Bruckheimer on the Enduring Appeal of ‘Top Gun’ and Trying to Stop Tony Scott From Riding His Motorcycle During Production

Getting any movie made is an accomplishment. Having that movie become a success is a near-miracle. But having that movie endure for years or even decades past its release date? That’s what every filmmaker hopes for and few achieve. When producer Jerry Bruckheimer started putting together what would become Top Gun, he had no idea how big the film would be, nor how long-lasting its legacy would become. It was director Tony Scott’s second movie, and Tom Cruise was just on the cusp of superstardom coming off starring roles in Risky Business and Legend.

How Top Gun Director Tony Scott Got Fired Three Times From the Tom Cruise Blockbuster

Top Gun was released 35 years ago this week, but not without plenty of dog fights between director Tony Scott and Paramount Studios. Scott, who died in 2012, recounted for a Top Gun DVD commentary about a decade earlier that he was fired three times from the film, which would eventually become a runaway hit that turned Tom Cruise into an action star. The film, about fighter pilots training at the U.S. Navy’s Fighter Weapons School at Naval Station Miramar in San Diego, premiered in New York City on May 12, 1986, and a sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, will come out later this year after several pandemic-related delays.
