Tony Kushner Deconstructed ‘West Side Story’ for Steven Spielberg – Until He ‘Started Making Sh*t Up’

You can’t remake a Hollywood and Broadway musical classic without breaking a few eggs. Long-time Steven Spielberg collaborator and “Angels in America” Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner knew that from his very first discussions with the director, who came to him in 2017 to adapt the 1957 “West Side Story” musical into a second movie. Their shared goal: make the story and characters deeper, richer, and more authentic to the period, from the history of juvenile delinquency in the ’50s and the San Juan Hill neighborhood razed to build Lincoln Center to the roots of Puerto Rican New York. While Kushner...

Theater Talk: Steven Spielberg/Tony Kushner remake of WEST SIDE STORY is a lush, gorgeous movie with considerable added context

Opinions are strong and mixed for Steven Spielberg's 2021 remake of the 1957 movie WEST SIDE STORY which was based on the original Broadway musical. This was a collaboration of Spielberg with a new book by Tony Kushner, choreography by Justin Peck, and involvement with Stephen Sondheim who wrote the original Broadway lyrics. People and critics either love it or hate it, although most of the negative comments take issue with cultural appropriation and casting choices. As far as a movie goes, most agree that it is beautifully filmed using New York City as almost an extra character.

Tony Kushner on Tackling ‘West Side Story’ With Spielberg: “We Knew We Were Going Into a Complicated Situation”

Stephen Sondheim, who died Nov. 26 at 91, leaves us with a parting gift in the form of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story, out Dec. 10. Sondheim wrote the lyrics for the landmark 1957 Broadway musical, which remain mostly untouched in the new adaptation, according to screenwriter Tony Kushner, a frequent Spielberg collaborator (Munich, Lincoln) who was tasked with updating West Side Story to contemporary sensibilities. Kushner, 65, spoke to THR two days before Sondheim’s passing about re-envisioning the classic musical — and why he anticipates Story will avoid the kinds of criticism leveled at In the Heights. What were your...

Emma Thompson and Tony Kushner Reflect on a Year of Rest and Resignation

Emma Thompson won the first of two Academy Awards for her role as the kind, level-headed, and loyalty-torn Margaret Schlegel in the 1992 Merchant-Ivory masterpiece Howards End. To watch Thompson over the course of the film’s two-and-a-half hours is to witness precisely what makes the 61-year-old actor the rarest of cinematic talents. Much of the magic of Thompson’s work in the film lies in her tension-filled interactions with other characters (particularly when she’s playing opposite Helena Bonham Carter as her willful younger sister, where their emotional choreography is so nuanced that they finish each other’s sentences ). There are many Hollywood legends whose mere screen presence steals a film; they often seem beamed onto set for the duration of their scenes to enact a moving, star-worthy monologue. But one of the great gifts of Thompson’s career is that she’s less of a scene-stealer and more of a scene-maker.
