Powell’s NXT Hit List: Johnny Gargano vs. Bronson Reed in a steel cage match for the NXT North American Championship, Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher vs. Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde, Killian Dain vs. Alexander Wolfe, Zoey Stark vs. Toni Storm, Cameron Grimes vs. Jake Atlas

Johnny Gargano vs. Bronson Reed in a steel cage match for the NXT North American Championship: NXT did a terrific job of setting the table for the Reed win. While it may have tipped off the win for some, it had to serve as a nice hook to keep viewers watching to see if they would follow through on the title change. The match quality was strong and this all made for a nice moment. The story that Reed won the title on the anniversary of his first match 14 years earlier made this feel even more special.

Zoey Stark def. Toni Storm (Pre-Show)

As the WWE Universe prepared for the epic Night 1 of NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver, Zoey Stark scored an incredible victory over Toni Storm in an explosive Pre-Show showdown. Hardly looking the part of a black-and-gold brand rookie, Stark has pushed the likes of NXT Women's Champion Io Shirai, Raquel González and Dakota Kai to their limits in impressive showings and made it clear that she's more than capable of competing with NXT’s elite.

NXT's Zoey Stark Stuns Toni Storm to Kick Off TakeOver: Stand and Deliver

Tonight's NXT TakeOver: Stand & Deliver kicked off with a match between Toni Storm and Zoey Stark, and the two got right down to business, locking up right after the bell rang. Storm is coming off of a memorable match against Io Shirai and Mercedes Martinez, while Stark has been impressing in a number of matches over the past few weeks. Stark found herself in several holds thanks to Storm early on, but she was able to reverse them and get the upper hand briefly. Storm, hit her with a big forearm and hit her with several elbows, but Stark clocked in a nice hit around Storm's neck and a big chop, followed by a high flying dropkick.

NXT's Io Shirai Beats Toni Storm and Retains NXT Women's Championship

The first match of a particularly busy night on NXT pitted NXT Women's Champion Io Shirai against challenger Toni Storm, and there was plenty of bad blood between the two competitors heading into the match. Storm had taken matches against Shirai previously, but Shirai was able to defeat both Storm and Mercedes Martinez in that TakeOver triple threat. That hasn't stopped Storm for going at Shirai, and now the two finally had their one on one matchup, which ended with Shirai making Storm tap and therefore retaining her title.

Analyzing the matchup between NXT Women’s Champion Io Shirai and Toni Storm

Io Shirai has been one of the most dominant NXT Women’s Champions in recent memory, but Toni Storm has vowed to bring her reign to an end. Storm has been on a single-minded mission since arriving on the black-and-gold brand, fixing her sights on Shirai and her title. She’ll finally get her chance in a one-on-one setting Wednesday night on NXT at 8/7 C.

Powell’s NXT Hit List: Finn Balor vs. Adam Cole for the NXT Championship, Io Shirai vs. Toni Storm for the NXT Women’s Championship, Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez vs. Ember Moon and Shotzi Blackheart for the new NXT Women’s Tag Titles

Finn Balor vs. Adam Cole for the NXT Championship: A strong main event title match. Cole looked strong by getting so much offense in, and Balor looked resilient for kicking out of everything that Cole threw at him. Kyle O’Reilly put on his Triple H costume and then showed awesome fire while attacking Cole. I loved the touch of O’Reilly tearing the Undisputed Era armband off of Cole. Meanwhile, Karrion Kross showing up in the ring behind Balor led to the coolest moment of the show. Balor simply asking “What took you so long?” before he turned around was great, and the staredown sets the stage for what I assume will be the Takeover main event.

NXT TakeOver: Vengeance Day - NXT Women's Title: Io Shirai vs. Mercedes Martinez vs. Toni Storm Result

Io sends Mercedes out of the ring before Toni and Io run the ropes and Io hits a flap jack before Io knocks Mercedes off of the apron and hits Toni with a rolling stomp. Io stomps Toni in the corner and gets dropped with a boot by Toni who follows up with a sliding clothesline before Io misses an asai moonsault and Mercedes tosses Toni into the ring. Mercedes hits a pair of suplexes before Io hits Mercedes with a meteora in the corner before Toni slams Io and Mercedes hits Toni with a spine buster for two. Io breaks up a submission by Mercedes on Toni before Io locks in a submission on Toni while Mercedes locks in one on Io before hitting an inverted suplex. Mercedes hits a spider suplex to Toni before Io hits a diving stomp and Mercedes hits a DVD with Io into the steel fencing at ringside before hitting a Toni with a DDT onto the floor. Powell’s NXT Takeover Vengeance Day Hit List: Finn Balor vs. Pete Dunne for the NXT Championship, Io Shirai vs. Toni Storm vs. Mercedes Martinez for the NXT Women’s Championship, Johnny Gargano vs. Kushida for the NXT North American Title, Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic finals

Finn Balor vs. Pete Dunne for the NXT Championship: An excellent Takeover main event. It’s unfortunate that NXT never sold me on the possibility of Dunne actually winning the championship. Had the creative forces developed his character rather than making him a near mute over the years, this would have felt even more special. And it was a special match, but I just couldn’t buy into Dunne’s near falls, which worked against my enjoyment. The post match with Adam Cole taking out Finn Balor and Kyle O’Reilly with superkicks was a hot ending to the show that left me anxious for the next chapter on Wednesday night.
