Stream It Or Skip It: ‘Dream Horse’ on VOD, an Unabashedly Feelgood Story Starring Toni Collette as an Earnest Horse Lady

Now on VOD, Dream Horse is the story of Dream Alliance, a race horse with a highly unlikely story, here ripped from the headlines and– wait a second. Looks like we have another BOATS (Based On A True Story) movie on our hands, don’t we? Jan and Brian Vokes and Howard Davies are all real Welsh people, regular folk who found themselves milling among snooty richie-riches when they organized a syndicate for racehorse ownership. Their saga became a 2015 documentary called Dark Horse, and now it’s a full-blown MOVIE-type movie starring Toni Collette. It goes without saying that some of the crazy stuff in this movie actually happened and some of it has been embellished, but will it be a rousing ribbon-winner? Let’s find out.

The new movie "Dream Horse" features a racehorse, Hope, and a small town in Wales that I can't even begin to pronounce. Jan Vokes works at a big box store during the day, tends bar at night, cares for her husband who's grown too arthritic for farm work. One night at the bar, she overhears a tax adviser talk about buying into a racehorse syndicate, and her dreams take shape.

Sophie Turner Ascends The Staircase to Join Toni Collette, Parker Posey and Juliette Binoche

HBO Max is clearly gunning for your now-empty Mare of Easttown minutes with the cast of their upcoming docudrama, The Staircase. According to Deadline, Game of Thrones’s Sophie Turner is just the latest star to join the streamer’s scripted TV adaptation, based on the 2004 documentary series of the same name from director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade about author Michael Peterson. Peterson has been accused of killing his wife Kathleen in 2001, though he claimed to have found her at the bottom of a (you guessed it) staircase in their home.

Parker Posey Joins Colin Firth and Toni Collette in Michael Peterson Limited Series ‘The Staircase’ at HBO Max

Parker Posey will star alongside Colin Firth, Toni Collette, Juliette Binoche and Rosemarie DeWitt in the HBO Max limited series “The Staircase.”. The eight-parter is based on the docuseries of the same name and various books and reports on the Michael Peterson (Firth) case. Peterson was accused of murdering his wife, Kathleen (Collette), in 2001. He claimed she died after falling down the stairs at their home after consuming alcohol and Valium, but police suspected he bludgeoned her to death and staged the scene to look like an accident. An autopsy revealed that Kathleen died from blows to the back of her head with a blunt object and other injuries. The docuseries was originally released in 2004, with creator Jean-Xavier de Lestrade updating with new information years later. Netflix released it as a 13-episode series in 2018.

Parker Posey Joins Colin Firth and Toni Collette in HBO Max Crime Show 'The Staircase'

Indie queen Parkey Posey has signed on to join the cast of HBO Max's true-crime series The Staircase starring Colin Firth and Toni Collette. Director Antonio Campos is putting together quite a cast for this one, as the eight-episode limited series will also co-star Juliette Binoche and Rosemarie DeWitt. That's four formidable actresses in a single show that's anchored by an Oscar winner. Not too shabby if I do say so myself.

Why Toni Collette Thinks Dream Horse Is A ‘Truly Inspirational’ Project

In between the reality-defying turns movies often take, such as a zombie heist in Army of the Dead or the bold style and color of upcoming musical In The Heights, it can be refreshing to sit back and watch a more grounded storyline that follows something real and impactful rooted in an actual story. One of this weekend’s offerings is Dream Horse, which stars Toni Collette as Jan Vokes, a Welsh woman who decides to breed her own race horse, Dream Alliance.

Dream Horse review: Toni Collette chases hope on four legs in gentle Welsh dramedy

Some people try to mitigate a midlife crisis with fast boats or fancy cars; all Jan Vokes (Toni Collette) wants is a horse. The kids are grown, her husband (Game of Thrones' Owen Teale) is a sentient lump on the couch, and she can see every border of their little Welsh hamlet from her house. Nevertheless, she persists: why resign yourself so soon to a life of drab cardigans and quiet desperation?

Toni Collette Formed A ‘Profound’ Bond With One Horse On Set Of Dream Horse

It’s been a tense few years for Toni Collette (on screen that is) with a number of gripping projects to sink her acting chops into. The Oscar-nominated actress recently played a concerned ship commander on Stowaway, a lifestyle guru in Rian Johnson’s whodunnit Knives Out and a grieving mother in Hereditary. But her latest project is Dream Horse, a feel-good film about a Welsh store clerk and bartender who decides to breed her own horse into race shape.

Toni Collette weighs in on a 'Hereditary' sequel and why she doesn't watch scary movies

“Hereditary” might have another relative waiting in the wings ... but it’s unlikely, according to the film’s star. Toni Collette, whose “shattering” performance in Ari Aster’s 2018 supernatural horror generated Oscar buzz, discussed with the Daily News whether she thinks a sequel could be in the works and what it’d mean for her character, Annie.
