Watching Omar (Opera) at Spoleto Festival Opening Night

Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels’s world premiere opera recounts the life and autobiography of Omar Ibn Said, an African scholar enslaved in the Carolinas who refused to be defined or erased by his captors. Spoleto Festival USA ran from May 26th to June 11th. At the time, Las Manitas was a busy breakfast and lunch spot for Austin's progressive leaders, and the school – the city's only Spanish immersion preschool and only full-time Downtown child care provider – quickly developed its own following.
