Watching Omar (Opera) at Spoleto Festival Opening Night

Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels’s world premiere opera recounts the life and autobiography of Omar Ibn Said, an African scholar enslaved in the Carolinas who refused to be defined or erased by his captors. Spoleto Festival USA ran from May 26th to June 11th. More information can be found at https://spoletousa.org The History of Spoleto, cited from Spoletousa.org: Spoleto Festival USA was founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti, who sought to create an American counterpart to the annual Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy, that he founded in 1958. Looking for a city that would provide the charm of Spoleto as well as its wealth of theaters, churches and other performances spaces, Menotti selected Charleston as the ideal location. The historic city provided a perfect fit: it was intimate enough that the Festival would captivate the entire city, yet cosmopolitan enough to provide an enthusiastic audience and robust infrastructure. These pundits have dismissed the Jan. 6 panel as a purely partisan operation and said it won’t affect the election.

July DanceWatch: Tiny dances, miles to go, beating pulses, shadows in the dark

It’s July! Along with sunny skies and warmer days, finally, come outdoor performances—site-specific ones, to be exact. Site-specific dance is defined as dancing outside the conventional theater setting, conceived with a particular location in mind or relating to a site, which encompasses a lot. Not a new concept, though: most indigenous cultures already dance in various outdoor or non-theater spaces, for a wider variety of reasons than Western cultures. But what’s unique about it is that it animates and redefines spaces in surprising and magical ways, and helps us see our “ordinary” surroundings in a new light.

For Escuelita del Alma, History Prepares to Repeat Itself

The preschool and child care center Escuelita del Alma has been through a lot. Educator Dina Flores founded Escuelita back in 2000, to serve the children of employees at Las Manitas Avenue Café, located next door on Congress Avenue. At the time, Las Manitas was a busy breakfast and lunch spot for Austin's progressive leaders, and the school – the city's only Spanish immersion preschool and only full-time Downtown child care provider – quickly developed its own following.
