Trevor Williams, Tommy Hunter prove that transition from starter to reliever is possible

MIAMI — Tommy Hunter believes that if a pitcher can start games and do well, he can thrive in any role. The Mets must conclude the same thing. As the Mets maneuver through injuries to Drew Smith (lat strain) and Trevor May (lower humerus stress reaction) in the bullpen, they have turned to a couple of once-capable starters in Hunter and Trevor Williams to make their impact from the bullpen.

That’s why we play, and it was a long wait,” said Hunter, who said he feels “good. Healthy, finally.”  Hunter pitched 1 ²/₃ hit-less innings in which he allowed an unearned run and struck out two. The line would have been...

Tommy Hunter tardy after Mets call-up: ‘late to the season’

Tommy Hunter arrived at the Mets manager’s office Friday and was promptly informed he would be fined for tardiness. Buck Showalter was smiling as he delivered the news to the veteran reliever, who was selected by the Mets from Triple-A Syracuse. Hunter was late on his first day back with the Mets? “I am late to the season,” said Hunter, who signed a minor league deal with the Mets in late April. “The season started a couple of months ago.” Hunter, 35, appeared in four games for the Mets last season before back discomfort landed him on the injured list, and he underwent surgery...

Mets activate Tommy Hunter, Megill diagnosed with shoulder strain

The Mets have selected Tommy Hunter to the major league roster, the team announced today. Hunter pitched eight scoreless innings for the Mets last season and famously also collected a hit before going down with a back injury, which required surgery and cost him the rest of the 2021 season. Hunter returned to the Mets on a minor league deal in April and has worked his way back to the big leagues. Hunter will wear number 34. To make room for Hunter on the 40-man roster, infielder Gosuke Katoh was designated for assignment.
