Even after 33 albums, Tommy Emmanuel won’t let up

The art and concept of the guitar is a complex one. There are so many sounds and tones the instrument can create via the musician that’s making the strums, chords and progressions. With this in mind, there are a few who utilize the six-string to its full capacity and Australia native Tommy Emmanuel is one of them while doing it in acoustic fashion. Since he was a child at the age of six during the early ‘60s, he has had a prolific career of 27 studio albums and six live albums to go along with a repertoire of intriguing originals and expansive renditions. On Friday April 8, Emmanuel will be performing a bunch of music from his massive catalog at the Greenwich Odeum on 59 Main Street in East Greenwich.

Tommy Emmanuel, Bob Ickes, Trey Hensley

Tommy Emmanuel has achieved enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. Or at least they would if he was the kind of artist who was ever satisfied. At the age of six, he was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a Certified Guitar Player by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. All the while, Tommy has hungered for what’s next. When you’re widely acknowledged as the international master of the solo acoustic guitar, what’s next is an album of collaborations with some of the finest singers, songwriters and, yes, guitarists alive today.

Joe Robinson: “I definitely come from the same school as Tommy Emmanuel, which is influenced by Jerry Reed, Lenny Breau, Merle Travis and Chet Atkins”

Can you tell us how the album sessions for Borders unfolded?. “I recorded the album during lockdown, which was quite a fun experience, honestly. And I recorded it, start to finish, in 30 days. I knew I wanted to make an album of songs about missing my fiancée, who was in Canada [while I was in Nashville]. So, you know, the border has been closed for most of the year from Canada to the US. I was recently able to go and visit. But, before then, I couldn’t see my fiancée for seven months or so.
