UH Still Won’t Say Why It Waived Todd Graham’s Termination Fee

Todd Graham’s sudden resignation as the University of Hawaii’s football coach ended weeks of speculation on the program’s future, and what it would cost UH to oust him. But his contract with the university included a resignation clause with an $800,000 termination fee. Instead of sticking him with the bill on the way out, UH decided to waive that fee. Hawai'i football coach Todd Graham, facing mounting allegations of mistreating players in the program, resigned Friday after two seasons with the school. Graham's decision comes a week after a state senate hearing in which former players provided testimony alleging verbal abuse and other problems within the culture of the football program. Athletic director David Matlin and other administrators remained supportive of Graham despite the allegations and the departures of 17 players via the NCAA's transfer portal since November.

Update: Todd Graham resigns as head coach of the University of Hawaii football team

His resignation comes after several former players accused Graham of fostering a toxic culture throughout the program. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as the Head Football Coach at the University of Hawai'i for the past two seasons. After much prayer and reflection with my family, I have come to the conclusion that I will step away as head coach of the Rainbow Warriors, with a very heavy heart. I want to give my thanks and appreciation to the players, staff and coaches who persevered through all the challenges of 2020 and 2021.
