Tobey Maguire returned as Peter Parker (technically he was Peter 2) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home to great fanfare and celebration. What you might not know is that Maguire nearly came out of retirement a bit earlier than that, though, because he was considered as a voice actor for the animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Sam Raimi returns to the Marvel realm in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but the director won't take another swing at Spider-Man — at least not without Tobey Maguire. Raimi and Maguire teamed on Sony's first Spider-Man trilogy, starting with Spider-Man in 2002 and reuniting for Spider-Man 2 in 2004 and Spider-Man 3 in 2007. A Spider-Man 4, originally dated for May 2011 with Maguire and Raimi returning, was abandoned before Sony rebooted with Andrew Garfield replacing Maguire as the younger Peter Parker. It looked like the end of the Raimi-verse.

Raimi, who developed a sequel to 2007's Spider-Man 3 before dropping out so Sony could reboot with Andrew Garfield's Amazing Spider-Man, has said while promoting Doctor Strange 2 he's "completely open" to reuniting with Maguire on Spider-Man 4. Maguire recently reprised his superhero role opposite Garfield and Tom Holland in the multiversal Spider-Man: No Way Home.
