Tianna Bartoletta: ‘There Was No Way I Could Think About Defending the Title Until I Actually Got Baseline Healthy’

Tianna Bartoletta is a three-time Olympic gold medalist, with wins on the U.S. 4x100m relay team in 2012 and 2016 and an individual victory in the long jump in 2016. During the 2019 season, a pre-competition drug test alerted Bartoletta that she was suffering from severe anemia. Iron transfusions didn’t help and, by that December, when she should have been competing in indoor track before the Olympic Trials prep, a doctor diagnosed a tumor—benign but hemorrhaging blood—that required emergency surgery later that day.
