New Music Monday — Joey Alexander, Steve Davis, & Caesar Frazier

Tune in to New Music Monday on May 16 at noon as Arturo Gómez debuts music from these recordings. Born Josiah Alexander Sila in Denpasar, Indonesia, Joey Alexander at just 18 years of age is already considered a veteran. He has been playing professionally for over 8 years ever since Wynton Marsalis invited him to share the stage with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra in 2014. Joey is self-taught and started his amazing playing at just 6 years old. Alexander recently performed live in the new KUVO Jazz Bonfils-Stanton Studio. His new recording of all original music features Larry Grenadier-bass-Kendrick Scott-drums and on several tracks guest saxophonist Chris Potter and guitarist Gilad Hekselman.

The Night Beat Highlights Recordings by Steve Davis & Conrad Herwig

For the 4th and final week of Doug’s Trombone Month feature, he’ll highlight recordings by Steve Davis and Conrad Herwig. Born in 1967, Steve Davis graduated from the Hartt School’s Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the University of Hartford. Upon graduation, he was part of the final edition of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. He joined professor and mentor Jackie McLean’s band in 1992, recorded his first album as a leader “The Moon Knows” in 1994, was a founding member of All for One, a combo steeped deep in the tradition of Art Blakey’s Messengers and was part of Chick Corea’s Origin. He appears on over 150 recordings including roughly 20 under his own leadership. He is currently an instructor at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Body Steve Davis passed from this life August 20, 2021 at Broadway Living Center in Lexington, Oklahoma. He was 65 years old. He was born in the middle of a raging thunderstorm on July 5, 1956 in Blackwell, Oklahoma to Jake and Anne (Carter) Davis. He was educated in the Blackwell school system and participated in baseball, football and wrestling. After graduation in 1974, he went to work for Shebester/Bechtel Well Service and continued working in the oil field for most of his life. He loved the water and boats, growing up spending every summer weekend at the lake with his family, fishing, swimming and skiing. These early years of lake life eventually led him to his greatest passion, dragboat racing. He spent many hours on many lakes with family and friends, and was all about sitting around the campfire, swapping tall tales and drinking beer. He loved animals and was rarely without a dog in his life.
