'Bridgerton': Who Will Be the Focus of Season 3? Shonda Rhimes and Chris Van Dusen Weigh In (Exclusive)

Bridgerton may not be following the blueprint of the books when season 3 (and 4) rolls around. Season 1 of Netflix's popular Regency drama -- like Julia Quinn's first novel, The Duke and I -- covered the romance between Daphne and Simon, and season 2 puts the focus on Anthony and Kate, much like the sequel, The Viscount Who Loved Me. But, as executive producers Shonda Rhimes and Chris Van Dusen revealed, the next season -- the series' third -- could very well follow its own path. The next in Quinn's series, An Offer From a Gentleman, tells the love story of second eldest Bridgerton son, Benedict.

Shonda Rhimes is proud that her 19-year-old daughter has "never seen" Grey's Anatomy

"I have a 19-year-old who finds it horrifying that I've written a show that all of her friends have seen multiple times," Rhimes says of her eldest daughter Harper, whom she adopted in 2002, in an interview with WSJ Magazine. "And so she has never seen it. And I have to say, I think that might be the best compliment ever. I think about it like, her mother wrote a show that tells all her friends what to think about love and sex. So she's not interested in watching it, and I think that that's a very good thing." Rhimes' other children, 9-year-old Emerson Pearl and 8-year-old Beckett, are too young to watch the ABC medical drama.

Shonda Rhimes explains why shows like ‘Bridgerton’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ aren’t “forward thinking”

Shonda Rhimes is celebrated for changing television with her shows, such as Grey's Anatomy and How to Get Away with Murder, but she doesn't consider herself a trailblazer. Speaking with ABC Audio, the Shondaland CEO chatted about her inclusive shows that feature diverse casts and strong female leads. While speaking of the latter, which earned her significant praise, Rhimes admitted, "I don't know that these concepts are forward thinking."
