After winning a spot in the Marlins' Opening Day bullpen, Armstrong made seven appearances and was touched up for 10 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and three walks across 6.2 innings.

Rays' Shawn Armstrong: DFA'd Sunday

The Rays designated Armstrong for assignment Sunday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. The righty gets demoted after allowing four earned runs total in his last two appearances. Armstrong's 4.50 ERA in 16 innings since joining the Rays is respectable, and the Rays' frequent bullpen shuffling suggests he could find himself back with the club in the near future. That is, unless he gets claimed off waivers. Nick Anderson (elbow) was activated from the 60-day injured list to fill Armstrong's 40-man roster spot.

Armstrong has four straight scoreless outings as well and has already worked more than one inning in six of his trips to the mound with his new club.

Rays acquire RHP Shawn Armstrong from Orioles

The Tampa Bay Rays are acquiring RHP Shawn Armstrong from the Baltimore Orioles ahead of this afternoon’s trade deadline, sending cash considerations to get the deal done. A veteran of seven seasons in the majors, the 30-year old Armstrong was outrighted from the 40-man roster in June after putting up an 8.55 ERA this season, and therefore does not take up a roster spot at this time, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t potential for the Rays to unlock.
