Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Can't stop Copp

Varlamov allowed six goals on 23 shots in Thursday's 6-3 loss to the Rangers. Andrew Copp had a natural hat trick against Varlamov in the first period and the Rangers never looked back, stretching their lead to 5-1 by the end of the second. Varlamov has dropped each of his last three starts in regulation, allowing 15 goals over that span. He'll be tough to trust down the stretch as the Islanders play out the string on a disappointing non-playoff season.

Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Available if needed

Varlamov (illness) was on the ice for the morning skate Tuesday and is set to back up Ilya Sorokin against the Panthers, per NHL.com. Varlamov has been out of action for the last two games due to illness and hasn't appeared in the crease for the Isles since April 9 against the Blues. With two back-to-backs in the team's final seven games, Varlamov should at minimum get two more starts this season. Even if he featured in all seven contests, the 33-year-old netminder will post his lowest win total since 2016-17 when he was limited to just 24 games for the Avalanche.

Islanders' Semyon Varlamov: Singing blues in St. Loo

Varlamov made 25 saves in a 6-1 loss to the Blues on Saturday. Varlamov didn't play poorly - his team around him did. In the first, a wide-open Nick Leddy beat him from the slot to open the game and a wide-open Vladimir Tarasenko picked up a rebound right in front of him and curled the puck around his pad. Justin Faulk beat him twice, including once on a rebound from a 3-on-1, and Ivan Barbashev poked the puck over the goal line on another rebound following a breakaway. No goalie can hold the fort on wide-open looks, odd-man rushes and breakaways. The Isles looked lost Saturday and Varlamov was a sitting duck.
