Diamondbacks' Sean Poppen: Throws 20 pitches

Poppen (shoulder) threw 20 pitches in an extended spring training game Thursday, Jack Magruder of MLB.com reports. Poppen was to be re-evaluated Friday and is close to rejoining the Diamondbacks, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Prior to the injury, the right-hander was establishing himself as an important piece in the bullpen, allowing one run over six innings.

Poppen (shoulder) will throw in a game at extended spring training Tuesday, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports. Poppen, who had trouble getting loose and landed on the injured list April 22, has been throwing bullpen sessions over the past week and is ready to test himself against live competition. The right-hander had been effective in five outings prior to the injury.

Poppen landed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation Saturday. Poppen hasn't pitched as though he's been dealing with an injury this season, as he's allowed just one earned run on four hits in six innings of relief, but he'll miss at least 10 days and potentially more. Corbin Martin was recalled to take Poppen's place in the bullpen.

Poppen was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. Poppen was promoted by Arizona on Sunday and will head back to the minors after giving up two runs in two-thirds of an inning. The 27-year-old has a 5.25 ERA over 12 innings between stints with the Diamondbacks, Pirates and Rays this season.
