WATCH: Sarah Jarosz, “Morning”

In Their Words: “2017 was an emotional year for me — my mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer the previous winter and the town of Port Aransas was severely impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Those two events caused me to think back to the early morning walks my mom and I would take along Mustang Island beach. We would always spot the Great Blue Herons along the shore. Anyone who’s observed these birds knows that their stoic, calm nature is a treasure to behold. The bird came to be a symbol of hope for my family during a difficult time, and even now, throughout my travels, whenever I spot a Blue Heron, I always think of it as a good omen; a little reminder of the important things in life, especially family.

Sarah Jarosz gets personal on ‘Blue Heron Suite’

Wimberley, Texas-bred folk artist Sarah Jarosz quietly has amassed an impressive four Grammys over only five records, including a Best Americana Album trophy for 2020’s gently-strummed “World on the Ground.” Yet she was she was unprepared for a different honor that prompted her to rethink her songwriting strategy: a FreshGrass Foundation Composition Commission challenging her to sculpt, over one summer, a 40-minute piece of thematic music, to presented live at the organization’s FreshGrass Festival in September 2017. She acquitted herself nicely with “Blue Heron Suite,” which was released May 7 this year in an 11-track studio edition. It’s a meditation on childhood memories and mortality, inspired by the breast cancer diagnosis her mother, who’s now in remission, received in 2017. Jarosz, who turns 30 on May 23, reached a new emotional depth on “Mama,” “Across the Canyon” and the title ballad, emblematic of the regal wading birds that mother and daughter regularly studied on long beachfront walks together.

Sarah Jarosz, Jefferson Hamer, and Jeff Picker Soar Through ‘Blue Heron Suite’ To Celebrate Mother’s Day

Sarah Jarosz was joined by her original co-conspirators on recording the studio version of Blue Heron Suite, Jefferson Hamer (on electric guitar) and Jeff Picker (on upright bass), to perform the entire suite live for the first time via Mandolin from The Bridge Studio in Brooklyn as part of a “World on the Screen” two-night event. The recording happened in New York in 2018, making a return to Brooklyn for this performance a particularly “full circle” experience for the three. The release of the album, Blue Heron Suite, was intentionally timed to May 7th to tie into Mother’s Day on May 9th, 2021, because the album was so largely inspired by Jarosz’s trips with her family to the Texas coast in her youth, and particularly by spending time with her mother there. The suite was original commissioned by the FreshGrass Foundation.

Sarah Jarosz on Her New Album, Growing Up in Wimberley, Texas, and Music As Home

Sarah Jarosz is one of the few people who is as successful as she is talented. While the two don’t often come hand-in-hand, unfortunately, Jarosz boasts both in spades. The nine-time Grammy nominated artist, who has won the award four times, has released five records, all of which imbue prowess in technical ability and artful intuition. Whether Jarosz is strumming her mandolin covering Prince or playing her own original music, she is compelling for both her stature and composure.
