Veteran defenseman Sami Vatanen signs in Switzerland

Just a few years ago, Sami Vatanen was one of the NHL’s most consistent two-way defensemen, logging up to 22 minutes a night and recording strong offensive numbers. However, the 30-year-old veteran failed to sign a contract in the offseason and instead is taking his talents overseas. Vatanen signed with Geneve-Servette in Switzerland for 2021-22.

Sami Vatanen Leaves NHL, Signs in Switzerland

Surprisingly, Sami Vatanen has made it through the offseason and the start of NHL training camps without an offer from an NHL organization. He wasn’t given the chance to make a team on a PTO (or at least he didn’t accept one) and he wasn’t signed to a league-minimum deal. As a result, he’s headed out of the NHL this season and has signed with Geneve-Servette in Switzerland for 2021-22.

Sami Vatanen: Inks overseas deal

Vatanen agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Swiss club Geneve-Servette on Monday. Vatanen split last season between New Jersey and Dallas after being claimed off waivers by the Stars in April. In total, the 30-year-old blueliner appeared in 39 games in which he tallied just six points. Given his limited offensive upside, few fantasy players should be impacted by his move away from the NHL.
