The Montreal Canadiens have signed goaltender Sam Montembeault to a two-year contract, the club announced Monday. Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Signs for another two years

Montembeault (wrist) signed a two-year, $2 million deal with the Canadiens on Monday. Montembeault was claimed by Montreal last October after the Panthers waived him. His numbers weren't great in a Canadiens sweater, though, as he went 8-18-6 with a 3.77 GAA and .891 save percentage across 38 games while filling in with Jake Allen (groin) behind Carey Price -- who missed all but five games with a knee injury. Montembeault is expected to be fully recovered by the time training camp starts in September, but even if he's healthy, his performance last season doesn't inspire much confidence from a fantasy perspective.

Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Undergoes wrist procedure

Montembeault underwent surgery on his wrist Friday. He's expected to be ready for training camp in September. Montembeault made his final appearance of the season on April 24 and stopped 24 shots in a victory over the Rangers. The wrist injury was likely a lingering issue throughout the season but the 25-year-old should be ready to go for training camp in September. He posted a 3.77 GAA and an .891 save percentage through 38 NHL games last season.

Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: In goal Wednesday

Montembeault will guard the road goal Wednesday versus the Rangers, Patrick Friolet of RDS reports. Montembeault will face a heavily rotated Rangers lineup, so this isn't as scary of a matchup as it would initially seem. He's still gone 0-6-1 with a 4.56 GAA and an .867 save percentage in his last seven games, so it's tough to trust the 25-year-old.

Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Beats Rangers' B-team

Montembeault made 24 saves in Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Rangers. Taking on a Rangers team that was sitting out about 400 points' worth of production for rest purposes certainly made life easier for Montembeault, who ended Montreal's losing streak at nine games. Montembeault let the shell of a New York lineup erase three separate one-goal deficits, including two in the third period, but Jeff Petry put the Canadiens up for good by potting his second goal of the night with 31 seconds left. The 25-year-old goalie will finish with an 8-18-6 record unless he gets the nod for Friday's season finale against the Panthers.

Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Starting Sunday

Montembeault will start Sunday against the Bruins, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports. Carey Price guarded the cage Saturday in Ottawa, so it will be Montembeault's turn Sunday at home. This could be Montembeault's final start of the season, as this marks the team's last back-to-back set. Following Sunday's match, Montreal is on the road Wednesday against the Rangers and finishes its season Friday at home against the Panthers.

Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Ugly outing at home

Montembault made 33 saves in an 8-4 loss to Washington at home on Saturday. Gulp. The Habs didn't play a good defensive games and there were far too many bounces that didn't go their way, either. Montembault had to just ride out the game -- Carey Price had just made his season debut Friday and needed rest to recover from that outing. Just throw this game out and hope Montembault can get back in the win column soon. He's 0-5-0 since his last win on March 13 against Philly.

Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: In net Wednesday

Montembeault will start Wednesday's game against Columbus, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports. Montembeault will make his second consecutive start with Jake Allen (groin) on the shelf for the remainder of the season. Until Carey Price (knee) indicates he's ready to give it a go in net, Montembeault should see a lot of action from now until the end of the season.

Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Takes loss Monday

Montembeault allowed three goals on 34 shots in Monday's 4-2 loss to the Jets. The fourth goal was an empty-netter. Montembeault got the start with Jake Allen (lower body) injured. It was a close battle, but the Jets were able to pull away in the latter half of the third period. Montembeault is now 0-3-1 with 11 goals allowed in his last four appearances. The 25-year-old dropped to 7-15-6 with a 3.59 GAA and an .896 save percentage in 34 games this season. He'll likely be the Canadiens' primary starter until Carey Price (knee) receives the all-clear to make his season debut.

Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Starting against Jets

Montembeault will get the starting nod at home versus Winnipeg on Monday, John Lu of TSN.ca reports. Montembeault is coming off a solid outing against the Maple Leafs on Saturday in which he allowed two goals on 25 shots. The 25-year-old netminder has made 33 appearances for the club this season in which he posted a 7-14-6 record along with a 3.61 GAA and one shutout. With Carey Price (knee) nearing a return, Montembeault could find himself relegated to the backup role once again soon.

Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Appears in relief

Montembeault made 23 saves in relief in a 3-2 loss to Toronto on Saturday. Montembeault was pressed into duty at the 13:59 mark of the first when Jake Allen was injured stretching his pad out on an Auston Matthews' goal. Then Matthews welcomed him to the game with a goal on the first shot he faced. Montembeault settled down and was only beaten on a John Tavares backhand that was going wide until it ricocheted off a Montreal defender and in. Depending on the severity of Allen's injury, Montembeault might get starter's minutes over the next few weeks.

Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Takes shootout loss

Montembeault allowed two goals on 32 shots in Sunday's 3-2 shootout loss to the Devils. Montembeault allowed a pair of goals to Jack Hughes in regulation, but he was only able to stop three of seven shootout attempts. With Jake Allen healthy again, Montembeault has dropped back into a backup role. The 25-year-old is down to 7-13-6 with a 3.64 GAA and an .895 save percentage in 32 contests. With inconsistent playing time likely ahead and poor stats to date, the Quebec native doesn't need to be on most fantasy rosters.

Canadiens' Sam Montembeault: Starting Sunday

Montembeault will guard the cage Sunday against the Devils, Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette reports. After Jake Allen stopped a career-high 49 shots in Saturday's win over the Maple Leafs, Montembeault steps into the crease for Sunday's affair. If the Canadiens were still in playoff contention -- Montreal was eliminated Friday -- they might have went with Allen for a sixth consecutive start, but the Habs are going nowhere and he deserves the break.
