Sam Haggerty

The Seattle Mariners have called up outfielder Justin Upton from Triple-A Tacoma ahead of tonight's game against the Los Angeles Angels. Upton, 34, signed a one-year deal with the team last month. Upton had been released by the Angels in April and he reported to extended Spring Training to begin ramping up his baseball activity. He joined the Tacoma Rainiers on June 1 and has appeared in 12 games for the team this month. Upton is batting .200 with two doubles, two home runs, six RBI, six walks and eight runs scored.

Haggerty was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Haggerty was promoted by the Mariners in late May, and he posted a .528 OPS in 13 games. Consistent playing time was hard to come by, as he made only 18 plate appearances during that span.

The Seattle Mariners have been struggling to score runs. The Mariners have scored less than 4 runs in half of their games so far in June as of June 14. The Mariners are currently running out a lineup with several players that are struggling. These players include Abraham Toro, Jesse Winker, Taylor Trammell, Dylan Moore, and more at times. The Mariners should give at least one of these players a day off and give Sam Haggerty a chance to play for at least a few days.

Haggerty went 2-for-3 in an extra-inning win over the Rangers on Sunday. Haggerty drew the start in left field and made some noise out of the bottom of the order with his first two hits of the season. The utility man has only logged 10 plate appearances overall since being called up from Triple-A Tacoma on May 22, but he figures to remain on the big-league roster for the time being with Kyle Lewis (concussion) and Mitch Haniger (ankle) both sidelined.

The Mariners are making a series of roster moves Sunday, per Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times. Infielder Abraham Toro is heading to the 10-day injured list. He had hurt himself in a collision with Adam Frazier during Saturday night’s game. The club’s announcement of the moves describes his injury as a left shoulder sprain. Also leaving the roster is outfield Steven Souza Jr., who has been designated for assignment. To fill those two holes on the active roster, the club has recalled utility player Sam Haggerty and outfielder Taylor Trammell.

Haggerty has been sidelined since May 24 due to right shoulder inflammation, and he still doesn't have a clear timetable to return. He won't be eligible to return until at least late July, while his move to the 60-day IL is part of a shuffle to make room for Shed Long (shin), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.

It's unclear as to when the shoulder issue surfaced, but he'll need to spend at least the next 10 days on the injured list following this move. Haggerty pushed his season average back over the Mendoza Line with Friday's multi-hit effort, one that snapped an 0-for-12 slump that had encompassed his previous six game appearances. The 26-year-old continues to see semi-regular playing time and has generated versatile fantasy contributions that include two doubles, two home runs and five stolen bases, but his .205/.247/.315 season slash is a major albatross on his overall value.

Haggerty is not in the lineup Tuesday against the Dodgers, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. The 26-year-old finds himself on the bench for the second straight game with Dylan Moore starting in left field Tuesday. Haggerty's role will take a hit later this week with top prospect Jarred Kelenic expected to be promoted Thursday.

Haggerty is starting at second base and batting sixth Wednesday in Houston. He has now started five of the last six games. Dylan Moore is slumping, and meanwhile, Haggerty is hitting .429 with one home run, two steals and a 4:3 K:BB over his last six games (14 at-bats). It appears Seattle is going to play the hot hand at the keystone, and right now that's Haggerty, whose speed makes him noteworthy in deeper roto leagues.
