Sam Cunningham: 1950-2021

He stood there in jersey number 34, a statuesque figure (6′3″, 210 pounds) on thick, dark, muscled legs. It was September 3, 1968, my first day as a sports writer for the Santa Barbara News-Press, the opening day of football practice at Santa Barbara High School, and the first time I laid eyes on Sam Cunningham. I had played football a few years earlier and never saw a player like him. He was scary but beautiful.

Extra Point: Remembering Sam Cunningham and a historic football game

I grew up in Southern California in the late '60s and early '70s. I’ve always considered myself having grown up in poverty, thus learning to appreciate what’s really important in life, and to have attended schools with a very high percentage of minority students, allowing me to grow up without prejudice. Plus, as an aspiring athlete and an absolute sports junkie, we had the opportunity to root for national champion USC football and (every year!) national champion UCLA basketball. Plus, the Lakers still had Jerry West and the Rams would go to the playoffs every year (and lose).

In memory of Sam Cunningham, a key figure in a larger movement

The Trojan Family lost a legend last Tuesday, as former fullback Sam “Bam” Cunningham (’73) died at the age of 71 in his Inglewood home. Cunningham was a man who accomplished a great deal – he was an All-American back in 1972, and the Rose Bowl MVP in 1973. He was drafted with the 11th overall pick in the 1973 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots and finished his career as the franchise’s all-time leading rusher-- a title he still holds to this day. His name resides in both the College Football and New England Patriots Hall of Fame.

USC legend Sam Cunningham and his unintentional legacy

Before practice Tuesday, the USC running backs room took a break from preparations for Saturday’s Pac-12 opener against Stanford for a brief history lesson.
