Black Panther director Ryan Coogler will produce Ironheart

In 2018, director Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther became one of Marvel’s most successful films and earned the studio its first-ever Best Picture nomination. Coogler is currently finishing the sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, ahead of its release later this year. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Coogler is expanding his relationship with Marvel Studios by executive producing the upcoming Disney+ original series Ironheart.

Disney+ and Marvel’s ‘Ironheart’ Series Adds Ryan Coogler as Producer, Reveals Directors

Marvel has tapped Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes to direct its new Ironheart series for Disney+, and Ryan Coogler’s production company Proximity is also now on board the Dominique Thorne-starring project. Deadline notes the character—Iron Man’s mentee/successor Riri Williams—is set to make her live-action debut in Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, scheduled to hit theaters on Nov. 11, 2022.

In the Marvel comics, Riri built her own Iron Man suit and has filled in for Tony Stark while he was out of commission, so we can expect to see her journey into superheroics in the show.

According to the report, Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes have been hired as directors on the new series that's centered on Riri Williams, a genius-level Black teenager who ends up becoming affiliated with the much more well-known hero Iron Man in the comics, thanks to building her own unique take on the armored suit. With Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark no longer part of the picture in the franchise after his grand sacrifice at the end of "Avengers: Endgame," Marvel has set their sights on a new Iron Man-related character, likely to help carry the torch and bring some much-needed representation to the ongoing universe.
