Wizards Report Card: Grading Corey Kispert and Rui Hachimura

The Wizards season has come to an end, with the team officially finishing 10th in overall lottery odds. This conveys a 3 percent chance of landing the first overall pick and a 13.9% chance of picking within the top four. With youth on the mind, I decided to look back through the season and grade two of the ‘Baby Wiz’ (shoutout Ava Wallace) on their season, as well as give some thoughts as to what these players should look to work on in advance of next season. Look for more season grades to come next week!

Their games look nothing alike, but Jalen Suggs, Corey Kispert and Rui Hachimura still traveled common ground during an NBA season filled with unique challenges and growth. Especially for the rookies. Suggs, the fifth overall pick, and Kispert, selected 15th overall, learned the NBA comes at you fast, so fast it tests the fortitude of first-year players competing against the best players on the planet.

Hachimura reached 21 points for the second straight game, including the fifth time in his last eight. Wizards' Rui Hachimura: Another 21-point outing

Hachimura chipped in 21 points (8-15 FG, 3-4 3Pt, 2-6 FT), five rebounds and four assists in 37 minutes during Tuesday's 132-114 win over the Timberwolves. Twenty-one must be Hachimura's magic number, as the forward has now scored exactly 21 points in three of his past five performances. Since posting just three points against the Pacers on March 6, Hachimura has scored in double figures in all but two matchups, and he is averaging 12.8 points during that span.

Wizards' Rui Hachimura: Scores 21 again

Hachimura amassed 21 points (8-14 FG, 3-4 3Pt, 2-3 FT), five rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal in 29 minutes during Friday's 135-103 victory over the Mavericks. Hachimura has now scored exactly a season-high 21 points in three of his past four games. After a slow and late start to the season, he's found himself in a starting role since March 19. During this stretch, he's averaged 14.0 points on 52/39/64 shooting, 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists. On the season as a whole, he's shooting an impressive 47.1 percent from deep.

Wizards' Rui Hachimura: Tops Wizards with 21 points

Hachimura provided 21 points (8-10 FG, 2-3 3Pt, 3-4 FT) and four rebounds across 31 minutes during Tuesday's 107-94 loss to the Bulls. Hachimura put up a season-high 21 points in the loss, scoring at least 20 points for just the second time this season. While the offensive production was nice, he once again failed to deliver meaningful contributions outside of the points column. Despite a consistent role, Hachimura should be viewed as nothing more than a streaming option for those in need of a points boost.

Wizards' Rui Hachimura: Fills in with 16 points

Hachimura contributed 16 points (7-13 FG, 2-5 3Pt), eight rebounds and two assists over 30 minutes during Monday's 115-97 loss to the Rockets. Hachimura started once again in place of Kyle Kuzma and came very close to a double-double. His eight rebounds matched a season high for Hachimura, who continues to regain his footing after missing the first three months of the season. Hachimura is unlikely to make a return to the starting lineup without some help from the injury report, but his return has provided Washington with much-needed frontcourt depth.

So, they are certainly hoping that this is the year, as Gonzaga enters the NCAA Tournament once again as the No. 1 overall seed.

Rui Hachimura is discovering new facets of his game after an extended absence

LOS ANGELES – In his third season with the Washington Wizards, Rui Hachimura remains one of the quietest players on the roster. The former Gonzaga standout watches games stoically when he’s not playing, dialed into the action from his spot near the end of the bench. He wilts midway through long news conferences, as if his body physically rejects the idea of revealing his personal thoughts. When he was asked after practice last week about one particularly joyful looking on-court moment, Hachimura answered, “It’s a very natural thing for me, having fun, playing basketball.”
