Ross Detwiler may be the Reds only left-handed reliever for the foreseeable future

With Justin Wilson undergoing Tommy John surgery, his season has sadly come to an end. Wilson was the Cincinnati Reds lone left-handed reliever earlier this season. The Reds have tried a couple of other lefties during the early-going, but Phillip Diehl was not the answer. After finding success in his first couple of appearances, the Cincinnati Reds were forced to designate Diehl for assignment once his ERA ballooned to 11.12. Diehl is currently at Triple-A Louisville.

New Reds reliever Ross Detwiler reinvented himself to stay in the big leagues

CLEVELAND – When new Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Ross Detwiler made his debut with the team on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, he had to face the heart of the Pirates order and throw two pitches that he had hardly used in the big leagues. Detwiler, a 36-year-old left-hander, made his Major League debut in 2007. He bounced between being a starting pitcher and a long reliever, and he mostly threw a fastball, a sinker and a...

Padres' Ross Detwiler: Earns win Thursday

Detwiler (3-1) earned the win over San Francisco on Thursday, pitching a scoreless inning during which he walked one batter. The lefty reliever wasn't efficient in the outing, throwing only six of 16 pitches for strikes. He was able to escape the inning without any damage on the scoreboard, however, and he earned the win as a result of San Diego pulling out the victory in the bottom of the 10th. Since joining the Padres on Sept. 14, Detwiler has given up one run while notching a 4:4 K:BB across 3.2 innings.

Ross Detwiler Will Start for the Marlins Monday vs. Nationals

Https://twitter.com/ethanbudowsky/status/1416875287833419778. The Marlins will employ a bullpen game Monday vs. the Nationals, and Detwiler will get the start. The Marlins are 3-1 in games started by Detwiler so far this season, but it hasn’t really been due to his pitching. He owns a 6.75 ERA as a starter compared to a 3.58 ERA out of the bullpen. That said, he does own a 1.35 ERA the first time through the order as a starting pitcher, so he has the potential to be an effective opener.

Marlins' Ross Detwiler: Opening again Monday

Detwiler will start Monday's game at Washington, Ethan Budowsky of SB Nation reports. The veteran southpaw will make his fifth start of the season with manager Don Mattingly employing another bullpen day versus the Nationals. Detwiler has covered more than two frames in only three appearances this year, so he'll likely only pitch an inning or two as Monday's opener.

Marlins' Ross Detwiler: Tosses scoreless first

Detweiler pitched a scoreless first inning, allowing a hit and a walk but striking out two Friday against the Phillies. He did not factor into the decision. Detweiler was awarded the start in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the Phillies. The 35-year-old found himself in some trouble with runners on the corners and two outs but was able to send Didi Gregorious down swinging to get out of the inning. The left-hander owns a 4.19 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 41:13 K:BB over 34.1 innings and will continue to typically serve as a middle-innings reliever.

Marlins' Ross Detwiler: Gets start in doubleheader game

Detwiler is slated to start the second game of Friday's doubleheader in Philadelphia, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. Detwiler will make his fourth start of the season, but just like the three occasions before, he's likely to be deployed as more of an opener than a traditional starter. The 35-year-old lefty hasn't tossed more than three innings in any of his 31 outings this season, so he'll presumably work two or three frames Friday before giving way to the bullpen.
