The Phils have released infielder Ronald Torreyes, who had been with the Phils on a minor league contract. Torreyes, 29, has gotten out to a slow start in Triple-A Lehigh Valley this season, hitting just .171/.237/.200 while seeing time at second base, shortstop and third base. The Phillies’ recent move to option top prospect Bryson Stott to Lehigh Valley surely stood to impact the playing time available to Torreyes — which may have been a contributing factor in his decision to request his release.

Torreyes was reassigned to minor-league camp Monday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. Torreyes went 1-for-11 with a run, an RBI, a walk and two strikeouts this spring, and he was unable to land a spot on the Opening Day roster. He appeared in 112 games for the Phillies last year, so he'll presumably be in the mix to provide utility depth at some point in 2022.

Torreyes elected free agency after being outrighted off the Phillies' 40-man roster in November, but he's now back with the team for spring training. Torreyes went 1-for-1 with a three-run home run in a 12-6 victory against Pittsburgh on Thursday. Torreyes stepped to the plate for starter Aaron Nola in the sixth inning and launched a two-out home run to left to bring Philadelphia all the way back from a 6-0 deficit. The 29-year-old only had one at-bat this week prior to Thursday's game, though he could receive more opportunities moving forward thanks to the clutch long ball.

Torreyes is not in the lineup Friday against the Mets. The 29-year-old finds himself on the bench for the fourth time in the past five games, as Freddy Galvis appears to have taken over as Philadelphia's primary third baseman. Torreyes is 4-for-30 through 13 games in September, while Galvis has a 1.045 OPS in 12 contests this month.
