Funeral held of Lancashire running legend Ron Hill

His success didn’t come shortly. His first main worldwide competitors was the marathon at the 1962 European Athletics Championships in Belgrade, then the capital of Yugoslavia. He failed to complete. At the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, he completed 19th in the marathon and 18th in the 10,000-meter race. But the subsequent yr, he broke the world data for 25,000 meters and 15 miles that had been held by Emil Zatopek of Czechoslovakia.

Lancashire marathon man Ron Hill funeral plans revealed

Hill, who was born in Accrington and competed for Clayton-le-Moors Harriers, died last month at the age of 82. His funeral will take place on Friday, June 11, and will see the marathon legend make his final journey through Hyde and Tameside, before ending at Dukinfield Crematorium. People wishing to pay their respects on the day are asked do so safely, while respecting social distancing.
