Two Thumbs Up to Roger Ebert and the Movies

Did you know that "Two Thumbs Up" was not part of our lexicon until it was coined by my late husband Roger Ebert to be used as a rating system for movies with his pal and television partner Gene Siskel on their popular movie review show? Dating back to the Roman Gladiators, when you wanted to use digits to express pleasure or displeasure, it was with one thumb only, whether up or down. It took two beloved film critics from Chicago to marshal in a whole new way of rating experiences. They say that necessity is the mother of invention, and it was necessary for Roger and Gene to take a new rating system with them when they left one platform for another (from Public television WTTW to Tribune Broadcasting to Buena Vista Television at Disney, back to WTTW).

Iconic Movie Critic Roger Ebert Was A Huge Fan Of Steak 'N Shake

Founded in 1934 by Gus Belt, Steak 'N Shake got its name from fusing the words "steakburger" and "milkshake" together (via the official website). Since then, it has become a landmark in American fast food history, and no one was a bigger diehard fan than legendary movie critic Roger Ebert. To him, nothing compared to the sweet "symphony of taste and texture" of a Steak 'N Shake steakburger. As he once stated in his blog, California's prodigal fast food joint In-N-Out doesn't even rank close, which he described as a "drippy, mushy mess on a soft bun."

Alloy Orchestra Changes to The Anvil Orchestra, a Name Coined by Roger Ebert

For many years, audiences at our Ebertfest Film Festival in Champaign, Illinois, eagerly awaited the live music accompaniment to a silent film classic as performed by The Alloy Orchestra. When they first appeared at Ebertfest my late husband, Roger Ebert, incorrectly introduced them as "The Anvil Orchestra," thus inadvertently coining the name that the group has now chosen over their previous one. The group, based in Southern Vermont, recently announced that they have officially changed their name to The Anvil Orchestra, citing that Roger's "creative word-play has now come full circle."

Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel Would Give Brian Raftery Two Thumbs Up for The Ringer Podcast, Gene and Roger

Aside from being Roger’s wife and partner in life for 24 years, my movie viewing was also influenced by Siskel and Ebert. They started on public television in Chicago, WTTW, in 1975, and remain part of the zeitgeist, influencing how we watch movies, even to this very day. So when I was contacted by Brian Raftery for The Ringer’s (Spotify) proposed series, I knew I was at once both excited about the prospect of it, but at the same time, of course, very protective of their legacy.

Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert: Movie Critics for the People

When Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert first started working together, they worried they’d end up embarrassing themselves on TV. Instead, they became cult icons—and then, ultimately, full-on superstars. “If you did a huge survey of the country, there aren’t that many people, probably, who give a darn about movie criticism...

How Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert Went From Critics to Television Stars

As movie critics, Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert had power, and in Chicago, that made them more than local celebrities. It made them competitors. Before they went on TV together, the two men had barely spoken to each other, even when they were at the same screening. They lived in the same city, but operated in different worlds.

How Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert Taught a Generation to Argue

Every week, Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert—movie critics and Chicago newspaper rivals—sat in an empty theater, showed a few clips from the latest releases, and talked. That’s it. No big-star interviews. No goofy trailer reactions. Just two smart, middle-aged writers … from Chicago … debating whatever movies they’d seen. This...

Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert Are the Subject of a New Narrative Documentary Podcast

When I was growing up I loved watching the Siskle & Ebert movie review show! The two offered movie reviews and criticism with each film receiving a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down," indicating whether it is a good or bad movie. There’s really nothing out there right now that captures the magic that these two gentlemen had. They are a big reason why I do what I do today!
