CHANDLER — Ricky Lee Nelson, 62, an Eloy native who played Major League Baseball after winning a national title with the Arizona State Sun Devils, died on Nov. 19, 2021. Mr. Nelson on born to E.B. and Willie Pearl "Precious" Nelson on May 8, 1959. He served as student body president his eighth grade year. While attending Santa Cruz Valley Union High School he participated in football, baseball and track and was a member of the varsity marching band. He wrote a song that was performed at one of the band concerts. He was a member of the varsity baseball state championship team his junior year and the state runners-up in his senior year. He received recognition on the All-Conference, Super All-State and Class AA-A baseball all-star teams. He also served as senior class president. He credited coaches Ralph Carino and Ray Montijo for giving him his start in baseball.
