MLB hands Richard Rodríguez, Danny Santana and José Rondón 80-game PED suspensions

Major League Baseball announced performance-enhancing drug-related suspensions for three free agents on Monday: right-handed pitcher Richard Rodríguez and infielders Danny Santana and José Rondón. Each of the three was banned for 80 games after testing positive for the substance Boldenone, "an anabolic androgenic steroid and synthetic derivative of testosterone that was originally developed for veterinary use but has since become one of the more common performance-enhancing drugs that athletes test positive for in sport," according to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency.

Richard Rodriguez: Suspended for 80 games

Rodriguez was suspended 80 games Monday after testing positive for Boldenone, a performance-enhancing substance, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Rodriguez has posted ERAs below 3.00 in each of the last two seasons. Ordinarily, he'd probably have signed a contract by now, but any team signing him at this point would be without his services for half a season.

Yankees Potential Free Agent Target: Richard Rodríguez

The New York Yankees have a good and deep bullpen heading into the 2022 season. However, they have learned the hard way that there is no such thing as too much relief pitching depth, and injuries (and COVID-19 outbreaks) can change things in a hurry. Exploring the reliever market is never a bad idea.

2021 Braves Player Review: Richard Rodriguez

When you win a World Series like the Braves just did, the moves that didn’t work throughout the season don’t really matter, at least not in retrospect. That’s pretty much where things stand with Richard Rodriguez, the right-handed reliever the Braves acquired midseason to fortify their bullpen. How Acquired. After...

Pirates reportedly interested in reunion with righty Richard Rodriguez

Right-hander Richard Rodriguez was one of the more prominent names cut loose before Tuesday night’s non-tender deadline, and now that the Braves have parted ways with the reliever, Jason Mackey of The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Pirates are interested in bringing Rodriguez back to the Steel City. Rodriguez posted strong numbers throughout his three-plus seasons in the Pirates’ bullpen, which made him a hot commodity heading into the July trade deadline. While Rodriguez’s peripherals didn’t back up his excellent on-field performance to begin this season, the Bucs were still able to move him to Atlanta for two young arms on July 30.

Opinions on Matt Olson, Richard Rodriguez, and Adam Duvall,

He’s quite the contingency plan if the Braves are unable to re-sign Freddie Freeman. Olson smacked 39 homers and recorded 5.8 WAR for Oakland last season, and with the short porch in right field at Truist Park, he would be liable to hit 50 bombs in a Braves uniform. Still, Freeman has to be priority number one. Olson is only under contract for two more seasons, and Freeman is the face of the franchise. Plus, the Braves don’t have to give up a bevy of prospects to keep Freeman.

MLB non-tender deadline: Matthew Boyd, Richard Rodríguez hit free agency; Yankees keep Gary Sánchez, Luke Voit

As part of the frenzy leading up to the likely owner-imposed MLB lockout later this week, Tuesday night saw the non-tender deadline. What's the non-tender deadline? The short version is players who don't have guaranteed contracts -- those who haven't yet hit free agency through the arbitration process -- on the 40-man roster will either be tendered a contract for next season or non-tendered, which releases them from the team and sends them to free agency.

Braves non-tender trade deadline acquisition Richard Rodriguez

The Braves non-tendered right-handed pitcher Richard Rodriguez, reports MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. Acquired in a midseason deal with Pittsburgh, Rodriguez pitched to fine bottom-line results in Atlanta but carried worrying peripherals and faded down the stretch. MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projected the former closer to make $3.1M in his upcoming trip through arbitration.
