'Our Flag Means Death': Rhys Darby on How the Finale Is Actually Like 'Grease 2'

Editor's note: The below interview contains major spoilers for Episodes 9 and 10 of Our Flag Means Death. The HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death, which hails from creator David Jenkins and executive producer Taika Waititi, is (very, very) loosely based on true 18th-century adventures revolves around the hilarious misadventures of self-proclaimed "gentleman pirate" Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and his motley crew of the ship Revenge, who don't necessarily have the greatest faith in their captain as he tries to follow his true dream of becoming a real swashbuckler. As the Revenge's crew begins to become more and more mutinous, their paths fatefully cross with that of the notorious Blackbeard, otherwise known as Edward Teach (Waititi) — and from there, the two men forge an unexpected friendship, each learning lessons from the other along the way. The series is executive produced by Waititi, who directs the pilot episodes, as well as Jenkins, Garrett Basch, and Dan Halsted. In addition to Darby and Waititi, Our Flag Means Death's ensemble cast includes Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen, and Leslie Jones.

‘Our Flag Means Death,’ Starring Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby, Brings Surprising Introspection to the High Seas: TV Review

Click here to read the full article. A few episodes into “Our Flag Means Death,” aristocrat turned pirate ship captain Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) admires his spoils with a frisson of glee. “Why can’t one be a gentleman and a pirate?” he muses aloud to no one in particular, before deciding to embrace that inherent contradiction as his new moniker. And lo, “The Gentleman Pirate” is born, and the logline of “Our Flag Means Death” stated as clearly as can be. From creator David Jenkins and executive producer-director-actor Taika Waititi, the new pirate comedy sets sail on the high seas with...

Taika Waititi, Rhys Darby talk pirate facial hair and sword fighting for Our Flag Means Death

Avast! Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will soon be setting sail. The two New Zealanders star in HBO Max's upcoming series Our Flag Means Death, a quirky, swashbuckling saga that's part bloodthirsty pirate tale, part awkward workplace comedy. Created by David Jenkins, the series is loosely — very loosely — based on the real-life exploits of 18th-century pirate Stede Bonnet (Darby), who abandoned a life of privilege to pursue piracy on the high seas. As he bumbles his way across the ocean, he soon attracts the attention of the era's most infamous marauder, Blackbeard (Waititi).

Our Flag Means Death Makes a Gentleman Pirate of Rhys Darby

Rhys Darby certainly does, but not just any pirate. In the new HBO Max series Our Flag Means Death, the comedian immediately recognizable from Jumanji: The Next Level, What We Do in the Shadows, Flight of the Conchords, and so many more roles, assumes the mantle of real-life “gentleman pirate” Stede Bonnet.

How to watch Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi in ‘Our Flag Means Death’: Release date, streaming info

“Our Flag Means Death” premieres on HBO Max on Thursday, March 3, at 3 a.m. ET (midnight PT). The series, according to the streaming service, “follows the true tale of Stede Bonnet — an aristocrat who abandoned his life of privilege to become a pirate — as he faces off against history’s most feared and revered pirate, Blackbeard. Bonnet does his best to fit in with the pirates he has accompanied himself with but find it hard to keep up with the new lifestyle. The comedy series shows the adventures the crew goes on, and what they can learn from one another along the way.”
