2022 Player Report Card: Rasmus Asplund

Our 2022 Buffalo Sabres report cards move along as we focus on forward Rasmus Asplund. Contract Status: Signed through 2022-2023 ($825,000/season), RFA after that. As most may remember, the drafted-center-but-mostly-winger was selected by the Sabres in the 2nd round of the 2016 NHL draft. His entry-level contract began in 2018 with the intention of developing in Rochester, respectively. His NHL debut then came during the 2019-2020 season (yikes) and he appeared to do well later on under the direction of newly-appointed head coach Don Granato. Specifically, at the end of the 2020-2021 season, he tallied 10 points (six goals and four assists) in 23 games.

Buffalo Sabres Player Season Report Card: Rasmus Asplund

Alex Nylander was not the only Swedish forward the Sabres drafted in the 2016 NHL Draft, as they also selected Rasmus Asplund in the second round. After playing a combined 57 games in 2019-2020 and 2020-2021, he more than doubled that total this season, to the tune of 80 games. He showed flashes of the player he can be in previous seasons, but this year he carved out a role for himself as a competent defensive forward who can chip in occasionally on offense.

Sabres' Rasmus Asplund: Ups point streak to five games

Asplund recorded an assist and two shots on goal in Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Kraken. Asplund passed the puck to Tage Thompson, who did the rest on the Sabres' first goal of the game. The 23-year-old Asplund has gotten on the scoresheet in five straight outings (three goals, three assists). For the year, he's up to eight points, 19 shots and a plus-4 rating. The Swede is versatile -- he can play center or wing, doing more of the latter in 2021-22, and his current hot streak is worth a look in deeper fantasy formats. Just don't expect his shooting percentage to stick at 21.1 percent all year.
