Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Misses quality start but gets win

Suarez (5-4) collected the win in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Nationals, allowing three runs on six hits in 5.2 innings while striking out five batters and walking three. A single-game ERA of 4.76 and a single-game WHIP of 1.59 are hardly impressive numbers, but Suarez did...

Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Yields four runs in loss

Suarez (4-4) allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks over 4.1 innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against Arizona. Suarez coughed up three runs in the first inning but he then settled in to throw three scoreless frames. The 26-year-old was then knocked out of the contest in the fifth inning after Christian Walker's RBI double. After going 3-1 with a 3.72 ERA through his first seven starts, Suarez is 0-3 with an unsightly 5.48 ERA over his last five outings. He's projected to take the mound in Washington next week.

Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Command issues persist

Suarez didn't factor into the decision during Tuesday's loss to the Giants after giving up two runs on five hits over 4.1 innings. He had five strikeouts and three walks. Suarez started off with four scoreless frames, but he stumbled during the fifth inning and was pulled after allowing a pair of singles, both of which came around to score after his departure. The left-hander threw only 58 of his 100 pitches for strikes and issued at least three walks for the fourth time this year. Tuesday's outing was the third consecutive appearance in which Suarez failed to complete five innings, and he now has a 4.69 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 42:22 K:BB over 48 innings this season.

Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Victorious in quality start

Suarez (4-1) earned the win during Saturday's 8-3 victory over the Dodgers, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk with six strikeouts in seven innings. Two early homers gave Suarez a big lead and the 26-year-old did his job to prevent a potent Dodgers team from exploding, avoiding trouble in each inning other than the fourth. The lefty appears to have found his stride, going at least six innings while allowing three runs or fewer in three of his last four turns with at least six strikeouts and over 100 pitches in consecutive outings. He'll look to keep things rolling with a start against San Diego projected for next week.

Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Shuts down M's for third win

Suarez (3-1) picked up the win in Monday's 9-0 victory over the Mariners, giving up four hits and two walks over six scoreless innings while striking out seven. The southpaw didn't allow a runner to get past second base as he dominated over 104 pitches (66 strikes). It was a welcome performance from Suarez, who hadn't struck out more than four batters in any of his first five starts of the season while managing only one quality start. Despite this effort, the 26-year-old will still carry a disappointing 3.68 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with a tepid 16.7 percent strikeout rate into his next outing.

Why an opener might help Phillies’ Ranger Suarez

The Philadelphia Phillies could try using an opener to get more from Ranger Suárez, following the starter’s slow start to the season. Ranger Suárez has struggled through five starts for the Philadelphia Phillies this season, with a 4.63 ERA and 1.629 WHIP in 23 1/3 innings. It’s...

Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Saddled with loss

Suarez (2-1) took the loss Tuesday against the Rangers after giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks across five innings. The 26-year-old pitched well for most of the evening but surrendered two home runs to account for all three of the earned runs against him. Suarez was pulled in the sixth inning after the first two batters reached via a single and an error, and both runners came around to score as unearned tallies with two outs. The left-hander has yet to give up more than three earned runs in a start this season, though his 4.63 ERA remains unimpressive. Suarez was never going to replicate his performance from last season -- when he had a 1.36 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 107:33 K:BB over 106 innings -- but he's still been below expectations early in 2022.

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ranger Suarez to start against namesake

There have been pitchers who have pitched against their namesakes before. For instance, Angel Miranda did face the Angels five times. Robbie Ray has faced the Tampa Bay Rays eight times in his career. Red Ruffing faced off against the Reds during the 1939 World Series. On Tuesday, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ranger Suarez is set to join that short list.

Phillies' Ranger Suarez: Tosses 4.2 innings

Saurez allowed one run on four hits and three walks over 4.2 frames in Friday's 4-2 win over Milwaukee. He struck out four and did not factor in the decision. The lone run to score against Suarez was Hunter Renfroe's sacrifice fly in the third frame. He threw 55 of 89 pitches for strikes and forced eight whiffs in the outing. The 26-year-old southpaw is now sporting a 4.38 ERA with a 9:7 K:BB through 12.1 innings this season. Suarez is projected to start at home against the Rockies next week.

Ranger Suárez making case to be a marquee starter

Imagine if the Philadelphia Phillies didn’t have Ranger Suárez. How many more blown saves would there have been in 2021? Who would’ve taken Zach Eflin’s place in the starting rotation? Would the Phillies have finished their first winning season since 2011?. Without Suárez, 2021 would have...
