For somebody who spent the bulk of his career — and life — in South Florida, Randy Shannon has lived plenty of lives over the past decade. After spending two years out of the Sunshine State, coaching linebackers at both TCU and Arkansas, Shannon returned home, compiling a resume that included interim head coaching responsibilities at two other major college football programs in the state.
It was an announcement that would’ve made you blink a decade ago — Randy Shannon, Florida State Seminoles football coach. After a long career, the bulk of which was spent in South Florida, Shannon joined FSU head coach Mike Norvell’s staff last season as an off-the-field analyst, getting the opportunity to assist in scouting of opponents and self-analysis of the Seminoles. A year later, he was tapped to coach Florida State’s linebackers, a position he’s intimately familiar with as both player and mentor.
January 1, 1988: University of Miami linebacker Randy Shannon and cornerback Tolbert Bain celebrate during a 20-14 victory over Oklahoma in the 1988 Orange Bowl. The victory gave Miami its second national championship and first undefeated season. Both Shannon and Bain were Miami natives who were originally recruited by Howard Schnellenberger and played their entire college careers for Jimmy Johnson.
