Harlem Festival of Culture, Inspired by Questlove’s Summer of Soul, Announced for 2023

Today, the inaugural Harlem Festival of Culture has been announced. The event was inspired by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s award-winning documentary Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised), which centered on the long-forgotten Harlem Cultural Festival of 1969. The reimagined festival will take place in the summer of 2023 at the same location as the original event: Marcus Garvey Park, formerly known as Mount Morris Park. Exact dates have not been revealed, but the lead-up to the event will consist of a series of live entertainment and social and economic development programs, culminating with a multi-day outdoor music festival, according to press materials.

Now, thanks in part to Quest shining a light on the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival with Summer Of Soul, the festival will be returning to Marcus Garvey Park (formerly Mount Morris Park) as the Harlem Festival of Culture in 2023. According to Billboard, attendees of the original festival in ’69, after seeing the documentary, will relaunch the festival next year to pay tribute to the original while updating it for the modern era.

Questlove, a member of the Philadelphia Grammy-famed band The Roots, won the award the same night in question for the Best Documentary of the year. But being part of history and its overall greatness, Questlove refuses to let his hometown history-making comrad overshadow his night. The Roots meber took the stage inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas to announce one of the biggest awards of the night for Song of the Year during the 2022 Grammy Awards before he decided to address his experience at the Academy Awards just a week before. "All right, I am going to present this award and I trust that you people will stay 500 feet away from me," he joked. "And you know, this is now a special moment for someone. And we're going to make a memory for them tonight."
