Rex Chapman commits major blunder with Pete Gillen

CBS and Turner hired Rex Chapman to serve as an analyst during March Madness, and the move has not worked out well. On Saturday, Chapman committed an embarrassing mistake. Chapman, a former Kentucky basketball star and veteran NBA player, was talking about Providence advancing to the Sweet 16. He mentioned their former coach, Pete Gillen, and said “rest in peace,” thinking the 74-year-old was dead.

He won 392 games in 613 tries as a collegiate basketball coach at three major universities during a head coaching career that spanned some 20 seasons. But anyone who knows Pete Gillen wouldn’t be at all surprised if he had a career as a stand-up comic, or hosting a late-night TV talk show.

Pete Gillen, Len Elmore, Nancy Lieberman to be honored with Joe Lapchick Character Award

NEW YORK -- Pete Gillen, Len Elmore and Nancy Lieberman will be this year's recipients of the Joe Lapchick Character Award. Gillen helped the Xavier Musketeers to the NCAA tournament seven times and won 202 games. He was the winningest coach in school history until Chris Mack passed him in 2018. Gillen then went to Providence and led the team to the Elite Eight in 1997, upsetting Marquette and Duke and beating Chattanooga before losing in overtime to eventual national champion Arizona.
