Denis Villeneuve Had To Convince Paul Dano That Prisoners' Darkness Served A Purpose

Denis Villeneuve has always been a filmmaker who pushed boundaries in his storytelling. This can be seen in his earlier films like "Enemy," telling a story that transfigured feelings of lust and desire in dark and intense ways. The striking imagery accompanying Villeneuve's films matched the story's tone, creating an atmosphere that reels viewers in from the get-go. Such intensity in filmmaking continued to be evident in his big blockbuster productions like "Blade Runner 2049" and "Dune." Both epic sci-fi stories thrive off evocative imagery, constantly teetering on the darker and more ambiguous sides of their themes of humanity, power struggles, and violence.

Michaela Coel, John Turturro, And Paul Dano Will Support The Assassins of ‘Mr. And Mrs. Smith’

Amazon Prime’s series-ification of Mr. and Mrs. Smith is rolling steadily (and somewhat stealthily) along. According to Variety, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, and Paul Dano are joining Donald Glover and Maya Erskine in the cast. Glover and Erskine play the titular assassins first brought to life by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, but the production hasn’t revealed the nature of Coel, Turturro, or Dano’s characters. No real surprise there, since they’re probably saving all real surprises for the show itself.

Rating "The Batman’s" Riddler: Did Paul Dano surpass what’s been done?

This story originally appeared on Winter is Coming. When The Riddler was announced as the main villain in Matt Reeves' "The Batman," there were Bat fans who were skeptical. It's not that the Riddler isn't iconic; he is. But he's usually portrayed as a purveyor of whimsy, a kind of maniacal trickster who plays second fiddle to the more prominent villains of Gotham City.

Why Paul Dano Was Drawn To Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners

Paul Dano is enjoying a well-deserved victory lap in the biggest spotlight possible thanks to his tremendous and chilling performance in Matt Reeves' "The Batman." The actor, known for appearing (and getting beat up) in various lower-budget movies, always seemed like an unconventional pick for the role of the homicidal, serial-killing Riddler. For several years, his casting in Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood" in 2007 may have resulted in a very long shadow over his career. How could he ever possibly one-up such an unforgettable performance that, in a perfect world, would've netted him plenty of awards attention? For his part, Dano put his head down and continued working in many smaller roles in smaller movies (for all our sakes, we'll just conveniently ignore "Cowboys & Aliens"). And then "Prisoners" happened.

6 Marvel Characters Paul Dano Would Be Perfect To Play

Normally, these hypothetical comic book movie casting sessions are focused on actors who have not yet starred in a comic book adaptation - or, at least, not in a prominent, live-action superhero movie role. However, Paul Dano has already made his sleep-deprived comic book movie debut, and spectacularly so, as the main antagonist of Matt Reeves’ The Batman. So, while it is probably not likely, I would still love to see him bring the energy of his performance as The Riddler to something in a few new Marvel movies, too.

The Batman's Paul Dano to Write Riddler: Year One Comic Book

One of the standouts of Matt Reeves' The Batman is Paul Dano's The Riddler, who is interpreted in this iteration as a serial killer. His performance was praised by the critics and audience for his unique and chilling take on the character and called him one of the best Batman film villains. As fans are wondering if they'll ever see more of the character in some sort of spinoff, it looks like we'll get his backstory in the comic book pages written by the actor himself.
