Blue Jackets Need to Keep Patrik Laine, For Now

The Columbus Blue Jackets have a lengthy offseason to-do list. From deciding on the next head coach of the team to how to handle Seth Jones not wanting to sign a new deal, crucial decisions will be made that will determine the course of the franchise for the next several years.

NHL News: Henrik Borgstrom, Patrik Laine and Paul Stastney

Ben Pope: Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman said they have officially signed trade deadline acquisition Henrik Borgstrom to a two-year deal at a $1 million salary cap hit. Puck Pedia: Borgstrom will be a RFA when the deal expires and be two years away from being a UFA. 2021-22: $900,000.

Blue Jackets' Patrik Laine: Picks up two helpers

Laine dished out two assists and had one shot in Saturday's 5-4 overtime win over Detroit. Laine took the puck hard to the net midway through the first period and centered to Cam Atkinson for an easy tap-in that got Columbus on the board. Laine also drew a secondary assist on Jack Roslovic's go-ahead goal in the latter stages of the third period. It was the first multi-point game in almost a month for Laine, who has gone 11 straight contests without a goal.

Blue Jackets' Patrik Laine: Sidelined with illness

Laine (illness) won't play Saturday against the Hurricanes, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports. Laine has been highly disappointing since joining the Blue Jackets via a trade in late January, totaling just 10 goals and 18 points while posting an ugly minus-26 rating in 41 contests. He'll be reevaluated ahead of Monday's matchup with Nashville.

Blue Jackets' Patrik Laine: Mixed bag in loss

Laine managed a power-play assist Thursday, but he also skated to a minus-3 rating in a 3-1 loss to the Lightning. The apple was Laine's first point in five games and he seems to be having a great deal of trouble adjusting defensively. Laine was on the ice for all three goals allowed in the latest contest and he's forced eight takeaways compared to 39 giveaways in as many games with the Blue Jackets this season. While Laine is not playing like the elite offensive producer we saw in his tenure with the Jets -- he registered 250 points through 306 games -- it's tough to bench him outright in most fantasy leagues. Be sure to explore all of your options at the forward position before sending him to the virtual pine.

Blue Jackets' Patrik Laine: Lights lamp twice in OT loss

Laine scored two goals in Monday's 4-3 overtime loss to Chicago. After snapping an eight-game stretch without a point and an unfathomable 14-game goalless drought Saturday, Laine looked a little more like a superstar Monday, going coast to coast on a highlight-reel tally midway through the third period to tie the score at 3-3 and get the Jackets to OT. Even with this outburst, the 22-year-old has only 10 goals and 17 points through 34 games since arriving in Columbus.

Blue Jackets' Patrik Laine: Goal first point in nine games

Laine scored his first goal in 15 games in a 4-3 loss to Chicago on Saturday. So, the Columbus experiment has been a worse fit than the Winnipeg one was. Wow. The goal was Laine's first point in nine games and just his fifth in 23. The pending RFA could be offer sheeted this offseason, leaving the Jackets with nothing if they don't match. But Laine isn't helping his case for either a big deal or offer sheet with his stone cold play. At this point, a trade is still possible before the deadline Monday. Something has to kick start his game; we just worry that it won't come this season.

What is Going on with Patrik Laine?

Zero points in his past six games. Averaging just two shots per game. Consistency? Only if we're talking about his consistency to being inconsistent. It's crazy to think the last time Laine hit the scoresheet - Feb. 23rd against Chicago - Laine was the highlight player of the game with two goals and three points. It's been donuts ever since,

The absolute SNIPE show that is Patrik Laine seems to be fitting in nicely in Columbus

Almost two weeks ago to the day, Patrik Laine was benched by Columbus Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella. This was particularly alarming for a couple of reasons 1. this was only Laine's fourth game as a Blue Jacket, having just been traded to Columbus from Winnipeg, and 2. there was good reason for the benching, at least in some folks' eyes, as Laine's lack of effort in a key moment in that particular game led to a goal for the opposition.

Blue Jackets' Patrik Laine: Lights lamp twice on power play

Laine scored two power-play goals and added an even-strength assist in Tuesday's 6-5 shootout loss to Chicago. Both goals came in the second period to erase 2-1 and 3-2 deficits before Laine set up Oliver Bjorkstrand with four minutes left in the third to send the game to overtime. Laine also fired six shots on net, his best total yet in a game since joining the Jackets, and the 22-year-old has six goals and 10 points in 10 games with his new club.
