Nik Stauskas was ready to give up on basketball before Celtics called

Before the Celtics called, Nik Stauskas wasn’t certain he wanted to keep playing basketball. After all, Stauskas — best known for being the eighth pick in the 2014 NBA Draft — is 28 now. He is married, and he and his wife have their first child on the way. The life of a borderline NBA player is difficult — Stauskas found himself in the G-League playing for the Grand Rapids Gold. In total, he played for five NBA teams in some capacity — including a two-way contract with the Heat — as well as two G-League squads and a team in Spain.

Nik Stauskas considered retirement before signing for Celtics

Just five days ago, Nik Stauskas was contemplating walking away from professional basketball. The 29-year-old journeyman had been out of the NBA for nearly three years – aside from a 10-day stint with the Miami Heat at the beginning of January – and he felt he had given everything he could to the game he loves. However, that thought went out the door as soon as the Boston Celtics came calling toward the end of last week, as Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens plucked Stauskas away from the G League and inked the guard to a multiyear deal.
