Cardinals' Nick Wittgren: Faltering in May

Wittgren allowed a run on three hits and struck out one in 1.1 innings in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Orioles. Through five appearances in May, Wittgren has allowed three runs in 5.1 innings. He allowed all of one run in April, so this is a discouraging downturn for the righty reliever. For the season, the 30-year-old has a 3.09 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 7:4 K:BB across 11.2 innings while picking up four holds.

Cardinals sign reliever Nick Wittgren to compete for late-inning role

JUPITER, Fla. — The Cardinals plunged into the swift-moving reliever market Sunday afternoon and agreed to terms on a one-year deal with righthander Nick Wittgren. The 30-year-old was a fixture in the bullpen for Miami and Cleveland during the past five seasons but is coming off his most difficult year statistically in the majors. Wittgren had a 5.05 ERA and 2-9 record working in 60 games. Through 62 1/3 innings, the righthander struck out 61 and allowed 81 baserunners, 17 by walk and 13 who didn’t need to stop at first base after hitting a home run.

Cardinals sign veteran righty Nick Wittgren to one-year, $1.2M deal

The Cardinals have announced that they’ve signed right-handed pitcher Nick Wittgren to a one-year contract. Wittgren will make $1.2M, per Robert Murray of FanSided. A veteran of six seasons, Wittgren will turn 31 in May. He spent his first three seasons in Miami before being traded to Cleveland, where he spent the past three years. In his career, he’s played in 258 games and thrown 271 1/3 innings with an ERA of 3.75. His 23.5% strikeout rate is right around average, but his walk rate of 6.7% is quite good.
