The world of stage and screen is mourning the death of prolific actor Ned Beatty, who died June 13 at age 83 at his Burbank, California, home. Half a country away in Appalachia, people are sad to learn of his passing, too. Though Ned Beatty’s first appearance in the national cinematic spotlight included a controversial and horrific rape scene by a Georgia backwoodsman in “Deliverance,” he was a true supporter and believer in Appalachia.

This is FRESH AIR. Actor Ned Beatty, who appeared in more than 150 movies and TV shows, died Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 83. Beatty spent 15 years acting in theater before landing his first film role, one of his most memorable, in "Deliverance," where he was raped by a Georgia backwoodsman on a canoe trip. He earned an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in the 1976 film "Network." In this scene, Beatty plays a TV executive reading the riot act to a network commentator, Howard Beale, played by Peter Finch, who's been telling audiences not to trust what they see on TV networks run by corporations. Beatty warns him he'd better cut it out.

Louisville mourns the death of one of its favorite sons. Actor Ned Beatty passed away this past weekend at the age of 83. Born in Louisville on July 6, 1937, Beatty began his career with a role in the iconic film, “Deliverance.” Beatty seemed to work nonstop during his years as an actor, appearing in more than 160 films including the aforementioned “Deliverance,” but also “Superman,” “All the President’s Men” and “Network.” He also worked on many television series including appearances in episodes of “The Waltons,” “Kojak” and “Roseanne.” In 2005, Beatty worked with (developer, movie and music producer) Gill Holland on “Sweet Land,” a movie about Norwegian immigrants in Minnesota. Beatty felt close to the project because his wife was Norwegian. Gill Holland reached out to LEO to share memories of working with Beatty.
