Jets 2021-22 Season Player Profile: Neal Pionk

Defenceman Neal Pionk has become a staple on the Winnipeg Jets blueline over the past few seasons since being acquired in the deal that sent Jacob Trouba to the New York Rangers. Pionk has since thrived in this market, primarily battling for top-four minutes with the likes of another prominent Jets defender Josh Morrissey.

Pionk finished the 2022-23 campaign stuck in an 18-game goal drought during which he registered five assists, 23 shots and 36 hits. For the third straight season, Pionk reached the 30-point threshold but managed just three goals. While Josh Morrissey figures to remain the quarterback of the top power-play unit, Pionk should continue to get plenty of opportunities and should be capable of offering solid top-half fantasy value heading into next season.

This was Pionk's second assist in the last four games, though he's been rather inconsistent on offense since mid-March. The defenseman is up to 31 points, 126 shots on net, 165 hits, 84 blocked shots, 42 PIM and a plus-8 rating in 68 appearances.

Pionk provided an assist, two PIM and a plus-2 rating in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Kings. Pionk struggled in the latter half of March, logging just one goal in his last nine outings. He's off to a decent start in April after helping out on an Adam Lowry tally in Saturday's game. Pionk hasn't left the lineup since being reported to have an undisclosed injury March 3, and he's logged three assists in five games since. His ice time has dipped under 20 minutes in four of those contests, so he's still being affected by the injury, but not enough to sit out a game. The 26-year-old is up to 27 points, 108 shots on net, 134 hits, 66 blocked shots, 34 PIM and a plus-4 rating in 54 contests. He should see second-pairing usage going forward.

Pionk is still expected to play Friday against Dallas but could be at risk of seeing a dip in playing time.
